Q. "My seven year old boy sometimes awakens screaming in the middle of the night. When we go into his room he is sitting straight up in bed, staring straight ahead. We try to calm him down but he isn't even aware that we are in his room. After a few minutes, he goes back to sleep. If we awaken him, he doesn't even know why we're there, as he remembers nothing about his dream."
A. The reason that he cannot remember what he was dreaming about, is that he was not dreaming! What you are describing is a classic case of night terrors.
Scientists have studied brain wave (EEG) patterns, and concluded that we go through a series of four stages while falling asleep. We start at stage one and progress through the third and fourth stages. Within about 90 minutes we go into our deepest sleep.
It is interesting to note that we don't dream during any of these stages. If you awaken someone during this time, they probably won't remember anything. The only thing they may say is that they were "thinking".
As the four stages fade, we fall into a totally different sleep mode known as "rapid eye movement" (REM). This is the time in which we dream. If you could watch someone during REM sleep, you'd see their eyes darting from side to side. Throughout the night we go in and out of REM sleep. We usually dream for approximately 45 minutes before returning to non- REM sleep, which lasts for an hour or so, and then back to a REM sleep state. As the night progresses the non-REM stages become lighter. This explains an old saying, "an hour before midnight is worth two after".
It is when we dream that we can have nightmares. These are usually Hollywood style productions in full colour that seem very real at the time.
Night terrors, on the other hand, occur in stage four sleep. This is also the stage in which sleepwalking and talking occur. The reason they occur is unknown, and most children grow out of them. They may be worse at times of stress.
Of course they are very disturbing to the parents and siblings, but they really don't harm the child. It's actually best if you can stand to, to just leave him alone. You even said yourself that he goes back to sleep in a short while. As for sleepwalking, the same advice applies. You do, however, want to make sure he's safe from falling down the stairs or out of a window.
Children aged from 3 to 6 are usually the ones who experience night terrors. Sometimes they continue for a little longer. Of course they are hard to ignore, but it truly is best not to awaken them. You need your rest too, although it is difficult to sleep through a night terror event.
Nightmares And Night Terrors
Although night terrors mostly affect children, a staggering 15%, adults
are not exempt. They can start at any time of life and to any one. I
found this out when they started to happen to me - completely out of the
blue. I didn't know what had hit me! The first time it happened I woke
myself up screaming. Nothing was there. The rest of the night I dared
not even close my eyes unless it happened again. I didn't know that it
was a condition, and that it was called night terrors.
But what are night terrors? No one knows what causes them. There are
theories but no concrete evidence. One belief is that they are
mysterious glitches in the smooth transition between stages of sleep.
Another school of thought is that they are attacks by malevolent, non
physical entities. What ever the truth is it does not make them any
easier to deal with. They are terrifying.
For me they would strike out of the blue. It did not matter if I was at
home in my own bed, in a hotel, staying with someone else or camping in
a field I would wake myself and my husband with my blood curdling
screams. I didn't see any thing. I didn't feel anything - except
terrified. So frightened that I would lie awake for the rest of the
night wondering what the hell had happened. I knew that it wasn't a
nightmare. It was a million times worse
I believed that I was the only person in the world who did this. That in
some way I was demented or at the least disturbed. I didn't talk to any
one about it and hoped that it would just go away. It would stop as
swiftly as it had started.
I had never heard of "night terrors" until I was here in New Zealand
when I was talking to a young mother whose son had them. I related to
what she was saying, this was what I was experiencing. Night terrors - I
could give it a name. It was comforting in an obscure way to know that I
wasn't the only one. That this was a condition, albeit without a
scientifically know cause, or a cure.
Now that I knew what I was looking for I researched only to be dismayed
at how little was known about this affliction. How dreadful for the
parents that had to watch their children suffer. I was an adult and it
scared me to death. My husband, who couldn't understand what was
happening to me, felt helpless.
It was David, my husband who did indeed find a cure for me - albeit in a
very round-about way. He was experimenting with what he called Orgonite,
a technology that he had discovered on the internet (what a wonderful
place) that has evolved from the work of scientist Wilhelm Reich, a
contemporary of Einstein. Reich's technology moves life energy (or
orgone, as he called it) . By layering metal and organic material (wood
or cotton) he was able to move energy in a dramatic way. At the time
Reich's work was very controversial and was suppressed (as lots of good
stuff often is) but it is now undergoing a revival in an evolved form
(orgonite balances disturbed energy, Reich's technology only moved it).
David's interest in Orgonite became an obsession and our home was filled
with devices. We got on with living with them - and, I am ashamed to
say, taking them for granted a little.
It took some time for me to realize that I had not suffered with a night
terror for a long time. I was grateful but gave it little thought until
we went away. I woke up screaming - they were back! Why? It was only
when we were back home that I realized that we had not had any orgonite
devises with us!
Were they the answer? I couldn't be sure so I asked my friend, the one
with the little boy that was a night terror sufferer, to take one of
David's devices and try it. It worked. No more night terrors. Gone!
She was so relieved that she wanted to broadcast it. So she spoke to
other parents who had children who were afflicted by this terrible
unknown who also tried Orgonite devises. They had the same results. 100%
banishment of night terrors.
I wonder if in the 1940 Reich had any idea that he would be helping
people in the 21st century overcome some thing that he may not have even
heard of - night terrors? I hope that he is turning in his grave - with
