Cellular phones today are an important part of many people's daily lives. The kind of cellphone an individual owns normally reflects his or her personality. Before, the only way to personalize mobile phone was by getting one's favorite color. But like any technology, the cellphone has also evolved through the years. Now, a wide selection of cellphone accessories like ringtones, phone casings, wallpapers, screensavers and photos can be used to make mobile phones as unique as their owner's personality.

A ringtone is the sound your cellphone makes when there's an incoming call or message. It is a popular accessory due to the fact that it enables people to use their favorite tunes or sound clips as a ringtone. Gone are the days of just beeps and rings as ringtones have undergone so many developments. They now come in various types. They can be tunes uniquely created for mobile phones and already available in the gadget or they can be portions of popular songs or soundclips. Ringtones can either be monophonic, polyphonic or MP3. Polyphonic ringtones are a simulation of midi files or actual melody. MP3 ringtones, meanwhile, allow mobile phone users to use actual songs as their ringtone. And since each individual has his or her own preference, there's little chance that two cellphones will have the same ringtone.

The latest fad on ringtones today is the so-called ?names ringtones.? These are personalized ringtones that are downloadable to your cellphone. This type of ringtone is different from the regular one because it contains the name of the caller which you can assign to the appropriate contact in your phonebook. For instance, you can purchase on the internet a names ringtone with the name ?Ann? and then assign it to a contact in your phonebook with the same name.

Names ringtones are very useful because they inform mobile phone owners who is calling without even looking at your cellphone's screen. This type of ringtone is more advanced and unique as it lets you actually hear the name of the person calling you. This is another step forward from the previous advantage of assigning a specific ringtone to a certain contact. From just recognizing your caller through a particular ringtone, now you can be sure who is calling you with the names ringtone.

There is truly a big difference in using just a plain ringtone from a names ringtone. With only a ringtone assigned to a certain contact in your phonebook, there's still a chance that you might forget what tone you saved for whom. Good thing if that contact is a frequent caller, then you will remember his or her identity through the ringtone. Otherwise, you will still need to check your screen for the identity of your caller.

But with a names ringtone, you have more convenience and assurance. It's just like your mobile phone has its own intelligence for letting you know the name of your caller through the ringtone each time there's a call. Sounds futuristic? Not at all, because this is already the future in mobile phone technology.
