Pet Food Storage Container

    View:
My husband and I have two cats and two dogs. The dogs are hunting dogs and stay outside in a large kennel area. The cats are in the house full time. The dog's kennel is attached to a small storage shed in the yard.

The shed provides protection from the elements and also is a convenient spot for us to store the dog food.

After we had been storing the dog food for about two months my husband noticed that he would find pieces of the food scattered in the shed. After several days of this he discovered that a mouse had chewed a hole in the bottom of the bag. We decided that we were going to have to find pet food storage that would be mouse proof. Until we were able to go shopping my husband put a piece of duct tape over the hole.

The next day we went shopping. My husband insisted that we go to a pet supply store to find the pet food storage container. I tried to explain that we should check at a discount store first, but he thought that the pet supply place would have the best solution. The store had several containers for pet food storage. One had a device that would measure the exact amount for the pet and deliver it in a small container for feeding.

This was accomplished by setting the amount of food you wanted for the pet and then pressing a button each time you wanted to fill their dish. Gravity did the rest because the serving size came out at the bottom of the container. This deluxe container cost $75.00.

My husband decided that he could measure the food himself and we moved on to look at other containers. He settled on a flip lid plastic container that had paw prints on it. This heavy duty plastic bin was still expensive for pet food storage, but it was the cheapest the store had available.

After buying the pet food storage container we went to a discount store to pick up other items that we needed for the house. While I was finding the things that were on our shopping list my husband went off shopping by himself. I found him walking down the aisle carrying a large plastic container. It was the same size and style as the one that we had just purchased for the pet food storage. This container was less than half the cost of the one we bought. It did not have the paw prints on it, but otherwise it was the same container.

My husband put the container in my cart and told me he would pick me up at the front door. When I asked him where he was going he said that he was going to take the other container back. The container we bought at the discount store is perfect for the pet food storage. I am sure the dogs do not mind that it does not have paw prints on it.
Pet Food Storage Container
1 1/2 cups rolled oats 1/4 cup vegetable oil

1/2 cup flour 1/2 cup tuna oil, chicken broth

or beef bouillon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Mix all ingredients into a dough. Dust hands with flour and form

small, 1/2-inch-thick, round "biscuits". Set on greased cookie sheet. Bake 30 minutes (or until

biscuits are slightly browned).

Cool 30 minutes before serving.

As a pet owner, no doubt you want to give your dog or cat the best care possible. And caring for

your pet means feeding him the best diet you can.

Animals, because they are color blind, choose their foods by smell. Most dogs like gamey flavors

best, as well as liver, fat, garlic, onions, horsemeat, lamb, beef, cheese and fish. Cats enjoy chicken,

liver, fish, turkey, lamb, and yeast, and prefer fresh to aged flavors.

Remember that cats are fussy eaters and it is not wise to continually feed them their favorite foods.

Soon they will refuse to eat anything else; it is your job to see your cat has a balanced diet.

Animals do not need salt added to their diet as the natural salt in the food is enough for them.

Dogs may eat any vegetable they want, but cats should not have any starchy veggies, like peas and

corn. Some dogs and cats even enjoy fruits!

It's a good idea to always add a grain, such as Kibble, wheat germ, cooked oatmeal or whole wheat

bread to meat dinners. For dogs use 75% carbohydrate foods (grains and vegetables) to 25% meat;

for cats use half carbohydrate foods to half meat.

You will find, once you begin making your own pet foods, that it is really relatively simple and you

will save some money as well. remember that all pet foods should be served at room temperature;

don't serve food cold from the refrigerator nor hot from the stove.

Incidentally, you should know that cats should be fed three times a day, while an adult dog needs

only one meal a day.
