So, you've decided to learn how to do some really neat snowboarding tricks? That's a great idea. You can impress your friends and the girls on the slopes, show off what you got and maybe even form a personal fan club. Alright, maybe you wont gain a fan club, but at least you will look hot out there.
Before you go out there and actually start attempting anything that can be potentially dangerous, do your research and spend some time with more experienced boarders. However, there are some serious Don'ts that you should learn about as well. Here are some of the most important.
Do Not:
Buy boots that are too small for you. When you put your boots on they should be nice and comfortable. Too many of us are under the assumption that it is fine if they hurt a some because you will break them in. This is simply not true. You want your feet to be secure, but not to the point that you feel they are in a vice.
Buy a long board to learn with. Don't buy an expensive board to start with, you want to get a cheap board so you can mess it up during all your learning mistakes without too much worry. You are, after all, just starting out. Getting a long board or anything that costs too much is really not a good choice.
Be embarrassed if you fall. Who cares? Have you realized how many times pro snowboarders like Sean White has taken a tumble or two? Tons. Everyone falls, it is just something you have to go through if you are going to become really good at any snowboard trick.
Try advanced snowboarding tricks too quickly. Start out slow. The harder stuff will come with time.
Practice alone. Always have a group of buddies with you when you're practicing your tricks in case you seriously hurt yourself. It has happened. At least have one other person with you.
Alright, so now that you feel as if you've just had a lecture from your mother, get out there and learn some awesome snowboarding tricks!
Snowboarding Tricks How To
However, you still want to be able to talk to your friends about it without getting lost and wearing a big dumb blank expression on your face. So we have put together a nice little cheat sheet for you to use so you can sound and talk just like a pro snowboarder. Here is some snowboarding tricks terminology.
Big Air - I am sure everyone has probably heard of this term before. You probably heard it yourself and didn't really understand exactly what they were talking about and that is alright. What this means is when a snowboarder speeds up the side of the half pipe, and then flips the board into the air.
Of course, the point is to go as high as humanly possible, then land it smoothly only to get to the other side of the half pipe and try it again. Yep, I know. These snowboarders are very brave.
Switch - When a snowboarder does a switch, he performs a trick while he is boarding backwards.
Ollie - This is similar to an Ollie on a skateboard. The point is to catch as much air as possible by using the back of your board as a spring board while you jump up and lift your foot off the front of the board.
Speed Check - This is what you use when you find yourself going a little too fast for comfort. You simply start to snowboard sideways and that helps slow you down.
Scream - A scream is a really steep hill.
Jib - This term is used to describe riding on anything that is not snow, such as rails, cement or grass.
So you may not be talented to do all these tricks yourself, or maybe you just don't want to risk breaking your neck to do them. That's alright. At least now you can talk with your friends without sounding like a total noob.
