Things had now come a long way from the time only sailors built models in their spare time.

Like everything else this hobby too has evolved with time. It is counted among the top hobbies in today's world. The models are the source of pride of the maker, and considered to be a work of art. The fine details that the users of today put into their model boats, are unmatched by any other hobby. You could get a kit to start you off, and kits are available in a variety of designs and skill levels from the amateur to the professional boat hobbyist.
