If you haven't been on an aeroplane for a while, chances are that you've forgotten some of the basic things that could save your life in the unlikely event of an accident. It may also be the case that you are unaware of some of the more recent upgrades to security procedures at airports, particularly those put in place in the wake of the 9/11 attacks. If this is you, read on. It could save your holiday, or maybe even your life!



Identification: The agent at the gate or the check in counter will most likely require some form of official picture identification from you before they are prepared to let you through. Items that come under this category include driver's licenses, passports, and military ID cards.

However, photographic identification from your place of work or education are not considered valid. You might get through without photographic identification if you have two forms of governmental non-photographic ID, such as a social security card, but it's best not to risk it.

Checkpoints: Be sure to arrive early at the airport, as security personnel now make a point of checking every piece of luggage individually before they, and their owners, are allowed onto the aircraft.

If you are taking a gift for someone, don't wrap it up until you arrive at your destination, as you may have to wrap it all over again with new paper once the security guys have gotten through with it.

Every flight operator has a different maximum baggage allowance, so that if you go over the size or weight allowance, you may face a hefty surcharge. It's best to let the airline know if you are planning to take more than the standard luggage provision, as it will usually work out cheaper if you make the airline aware of this when you book your flights.

Write your contact details on the outside and the inside of every bag, as if your luggage is misplaced, it will make it easier for the airline to identify it and get it back to you.

Under no circumstances leave luggage unattended, as it may cause panic, and will almost certainly be confiscated and sometimes destroyed by security staff as a safety precaution.

Take any necessary medicines or special foods onboard with you, as the aircraft is unlikely to stock specialist medicines, and if its in the hold when you need it, chances are you won't be able to get at it.
