Window treatments are often an overlooked part of home d'cor. More attention is often paid to flooring, furniture, and color palette. However, your wall color, stone vs. wood floor decision, or fluffiness of a couch is not going to be as important as your window treatment choice. Windows allow for a number of elements to effect the home.
The right window treatment affects the heat and cold that the window allows in the home; which has a direct result on family health, and the family electric bill. The right window treatment can prevent view into the home; which can prohibit nosy neighbors, voyeurs, and intruders from seeing into the home. All of the furniture and flooring needs to be protected from the sun, which is done by the right window treatment. Aesthetically, window treatments can close in a room, or open it up. So, obviously window treatments deserve a lot more attention then they get.
One of the best options is vertical blinds. A vertical blind is composed of multiple slats, which run vertical from a head rail down through the length of the window. The head rail hides the mechanical components that move the blind back and forth. They are perfect for large window coverings or sliding glass doors. There is an array of color options and material choices. There are also design elements that can be incorporated into the head rail. Most vertical blinds will be a standard neutral color on the outer side, despite whatever color option is chosen for the inner design. The standard outer color allows for a uniform look, from the outside of the home. Vertical blinds can be made from plastic, wood, metal, or fabrics. Furthermore, you can choose where the opening will be-- split (center opening) or stack (left or right side opening.) Another option is a remote controlled draw, which allows the vertical blind to be mechanically adjusted.
What makes vertical blinds the right window treatment choice?
Large windows are going to need a custom-made window treatment. Most people look for functionality, durability, affordability, and aesthetic design. Other window treatments may have a few of these elements, but vertical blinds have all of them.
Since vertical blinds come in wood, metal, plastic, and fabric they are versatile to any design. Furthermore, the vertical design is much easier to clean then horizontal stacked designs, or heavy drapery. The fabric option, is the most likely to collect dust. However, all vertical blinds greatly reduce dust collection. The surface material and horizontal design are not optimal for dust collection. Our bodies shed millions of dead skin cells everyday. Microorganisms and dead skin cells comprise dust. There is an attraction to warm areas, like windows, where dust particles embed in fabrics. These dust particles attach themselves to the air-born viruses that make us sick.
Vertical blinds will not fade from UV rays. They protect the inside of the home (including furniture and floors) from the damaging effects of UV rays. Vertical blinds serve as a heat and cold filter between the window, and inner home. By helping to stabilize the inner temperature of the home, vertical blinds can substantially affect your electric bill.
Windows need a treatment that will prevent others from seeing inside the home, when we don't want them too, but provide a functional easy to adjust design for when we want to let light in, or entertain guests. Unlike traditional window treatments, vertical blinds can be adjusted to let a little light in, or a lot of light.
Lastly, vertical blinds are a light, free moving, and contemporary design. Heavy drapery often closes in a room, and makes the d'cor feel heavy. Mini blinds may feel cheap or out of place in contemporary design. However, vertical blinds are thin, simplistic, but still elegant. They open up a room, elongate lines, and make the room feel less cluttered.
Vertical Blinds Replacement Parts
Vertical blinds are the ubiquitous solution for sliding doors and large picture windows. Almost every house or apartment I ever rented had vertical blinds. They look fine, but they lack style and originality. A relatively new choice is available: Panel track blinds, which are also called slider panels or panel tracks. They are much more sophisticated looking and can lend a modern, designer-look to your home.
Panel tracks are essentially overlapping fabric panels that glide on a wheeled track system. The panels range in width from approximately 48? to 192? and in lengths to fit most windows and sliding doors. The panels, which are obviously wider then most vertical blind panels, are composed of fabric, woven wood or a solar screen material. If you want a warmer, natural look go with one of the woven wood materials. The choices here are very similar to bamboo shades or woven wood shades with materials like, bamboo, grasses, matchstick, or a combination. The fabric panel options are numerous. You can choose from sheer shades that let in light or darker fabrics that provide more privacy, all in a variety of colors. The solar screen material options, similar to sheer shades, are usually translucent, providing see-through as well as solar protection. This is an especially good option for large windows with views. The solar screens come in different levels of opacity from 3% to about 14%.
Panel track blinds can even be used as an affordable room divider. This is a very cool option. I have seen this done in small rooms and large rooms, even in office settings as an alternative to cubicles. This is also an excellent option for lofts which tend to have very open floor plans. You can even buy different panels for different seasons or when redecorating. It's very easy to swap out the panels. The possibilities are numerous.
Panel tracks are more expensive the vertical blinds, so this is not a truly fair one-to-one comparison. But most vertical blinds are just vinyl, which is very cheap, whereas panel tracks are made with more expensive materials. But the finished look is much, much better. A well chosen panel track blind, in a color and material that really suits the d'cor, can lend a level of sophistication that traditional vertical blinds can't match.
One additional benefit is the hardware that comes with panel tracks, a wheeled track system that glides almost effortlessly. This is a very nice high-quality touch and very different from many cheap vertical blinds which can be a bit clunky. When opening these blinds the panels simply roll back overlapping each other.
One limitation of panel track blinds, one that can be minimized, is that when you fully open the panel blinds, more of the window will be covered because of the larger width of the panels as compared to traditional vertical blinds. This is true of vertical blinds as well because of the stacking that occurs, especially on large sliding windows.
