Water damage in the home can come from many sources, but oneof the most common culprits is the washing machine. Every year, water leaking fromwashing machines causes significant damage in houses across the country. However, there are easy steps can be taken to prevent this from happening to you.  In order to prevent a leak and resulting propertydamage, you should take measures to ensure all washing machine components arefunctioning appropriately.

Inspect the hoses connecting your washing machine to thewater supply regularly. Check them for any corrosion and cracks. When movingyour washing machine to a new location, replace the hoses. Also when purchasinga new machine, it is best to replace the hose and hose washers, as well. Steelbraided hoses are the best choice, because they are durable and long lasting.

Check the valves used to shut off water to the machine tomake sure it is working properly. You will be able to tell if the valve is notmalfunctioning because water will leak from the valve when the machine is notin use. Be sure all hose clamps are tightened as well, so fluid cannot dripfrom that connection.

When you washing machine is not being used, it is best toshut off the water supply to the unit, because constant water flow into themachine can cause pressure to build up in the hoses and valves.

You should try and take steps to prevent water leaks fromyour washing machine; however, if a leak has already been occurring for sometime, or a supply line bursts, water damage is inevitable. Most of the damagemay be below the surface of the floor or wall and not immediately evident fromfirst glance.  Water damage can causemold and bacteria to grow, as well as rot any wood surfaces. If you suspect themachine has caused damage to your property, you should have a water damage restorationspecialist perform an assessment and if necessitated, begin the repair process.
