This is because not all pointers in the registry are useless after your programs are shut down. Some of these pointers serve a long-term purpose. These types of pointers are not roadblocks but still, many times they become disorganized.

A registry optimizer will not only clean out the roadblocks, it will organize the permanent pointers so the operating system can flow through them using the shortest path possible. Remember, when we think of these pointers as we illustrate the workings of a registry, we tend to think of them as being just a few. In reality, there can be millions of them.
