I have been in this business long enough to have received some odd requests for items to be covered, more than just pianos. Most of the ideas are either for items that are odd to have covered or for unique ideas for covering a regular piano. I took the liberty of writing some of my favories in the spaces below, I hope you enjoy them.
A Man's Best Friend Deserves a Cover. A woman from northen Wisconsin wanted to inquire about having a cover made to fit over her dog house, saying it just needed to be fitted and waterproof. After asking a few questions I found out that her husband did not like to have the dog in the house when they went to work each day after the dog chewed up some of their more personal belongings. The best remedy they came up with was to have a cover made to fit over the leaky dog house in order to protect the dog from the winter weather while they were away. Fortunately, I was able to talk them out of their concept and asked them to spend the money instead to fix up the leaky dog house.
Team Logos. We have lots of requests to put team logos on covers. We can put them on the front part of the cover, directly above the keys, we can put them on the side cover and we can place them in a larger setting directly on the top of the piano. The logo requests are relatively easy to do because most of the time we can get pretty good artwork. The tricky part of the request is when people ask us to dye the cover to match the team colors. We have done them in Black and Red, Blue and Gold, Red and White and even Purple and Yellow. Dyeing a piano cover can be pretty expensive, but the piano covers did look terrific.
House Dcor. Probably the most common reason for an unconventional cover is when the customer wants a piano cover to match the dcor of a certain room in their house. These are the types of clients who tend to not have budget constraints so they are willing to pay a good deal of money to get what they are after. Some of the oddest have been pink and green colors, family plaid patterns, very cool designs for ultra modern music rooms and even request to make a piano cover that will match the pattern of a couch or love seat.
Honor a deceased love one with their picture on the piano cover. I have only helped a few people with this request in my career. Through photo technology, we can take a portrait and place that face right on the piano cover, larger than anything you have seen before. The image actually becomes part of the piano cover fabric. Aunt Eileen will be staring right at you every time you walk by the piano and do not sit down to practice your allotted time each day. Hopefully she will have a pleasant smile for you.
Custom covers take extra time and money to complete, sometimes as much as five to eight times what a regular cover will cost. Myself, I tend to like a regular old brown or black vinyl piano cover, but then I have never thought of myself as a flashy person.
