The main difference between the two types of pool cleaners is price and this is because above ground pool automatic cleaners are far more affordable to purchase.

Its the actual complexity or lack of it in the case of above ground pool automatic cleaners that makes them so easy to buy. In fact once you begin shopping for one you will be amazed at the number of different models that are available that have only one moving part.

Built in pools are made of conlcrete which has to be scrubbed periodically and that is why automatic pool cleaners for built in pools are far more expensive. They are complex machines that are loaded with moving parts, including brushes that are used for scrubbing the concrete sides of the pool itself.

Also, unlike built in pool automatic cleaners that are most often powered by electricity, above ground pool automatic cleaners use the water power supplied by the pool pump to power them and move them around the bottom of the pool.

A hose is ran from an outlet attached to the pools plumbing system to the automatic pool cleaner and that is basically how the majority of them operate. There are some electric models that are available but those would be for larger pools that have a 'dished in' deep end.

If all that you have is a flat bottomed above ground pool then you will probably be better served by a less expensive model pool cleaner. Remember that all pools have to be kept clean or they quickly fill up with larger debris, even though they have a pool water filter.
