Why Do Women Divorce Men?



In the earlier times, majority of the divorce cases used to be filed by the men. This stemmed partly from the fact that women were more financially dependant on their husbands and had no means to sustain themselves if they opted for a divorce. However, times have changed drastically since those earlier days.

Recent studies have indicated that the number of women who opt for a divorce far outnumbers the number of men asking for divorce. What has led to this change of scenario? Why do women divorce men? While each marital relationship is different, there are some common reasons that the women cite for leaving their husbands. We will analyse each of these reasons in detail to understand what prompts the women to opt for a divorce.

• Women are More Perceptive in a Marriage
  
  Women tend to gauge the danger signs in a marriage much before men do. Therefore, while men can choose to ignore subtle signs such as unhappiness and distant behaviour, women tend to take notice of such problems. Due to this reason, the distant behaviour and other signs tend to have a greater effect on women.
  
  These changes tend to upset women more because they feel that they have lost something in the marriage. Women tend to prepare themselves for a separation or a divorce because of their perceptive nature. In fact, some tend to initiate the divorce themselves because they know that their husband will initiate it later anyways.



• Women are More Financially Independent
  
  The role of the women in the household has changed significantly in the past two decades. Traditionally, women used to be primarily homemakers with little or no contribution to household finances. However, women are increasingly being career-oriented these days, which gives them the financial edge they lacked earlier. This is the most important reason why women do not hesitate in opting for a divorce.
  
  Being financially independent has not only made a difference on the financial standing of the women, but their social structure has also changed. Whereas women in the earlier times used to engage with primarily other women in the neighbourhood, women these days have a plethora of opportunities to meet new people including new men in their daily routines. The most common place to meet other men is the office space. However, as more and more women devote more time to themselves, they are likely to meet more men in health clubs and other social activities.



• Most Divorce Cases Give Preference to the Women
  
  One would think that if the woman is not financially independent, she would not opt for a divorce. However, women are well aware of the fact that women are treated more than fairly in the court with respect to financial settlements these days. Therefore, some women may find it more financially liberating to opt for a divorce, get their share of the money, and spend it the way they like rather than constantly being dependant on their husbands.
  
  Some women find it very annoying to give a record of their expenses to their husbands or asking for money from their husbands. In fact, some husbands tend to keep a very tight control of their wives? expenses but spend lavishly on themselves. This can get very frustrating and lead the wife to opt for a divorce to be more in control of her finances.



• Communication Problems
  
  This is probably one of the major reasons why women feel so emotionally disturbed in a marriage. Women tend to place a lot of importance on companionship and hence communication plays a very important role in the way they perceive relationships.
  
  If the husband and wife are not able to communicate with each effectively because of any reason, it is more likely to affect the wife rather than the husband. In fact, recent studies have proved that in 23% of the divorce cases that were initiated by the women, communication breakdown was stated as the major marital problem.



• Search of Self-Identity
  
  Many women get so engrossed in their families that they forget about themselves somewhere down the lane. When they realise about this fact, they tend to feel a vacuum inside themselves and do not know where to reach. They tend to feel as if they have lost their individual identity in the course of becoming a wife and a mother. The search for self-identity prompts many women to opt for a divorce.
