It was on yesterday, that I came across a book which encircled about the story of two persons who were engaged in a same profession and mutually admired each other. They tried to convey their feelings for each other through sign languages as none of them had the courage to propose the other directly for they feared rejection at the other end. And this continued for a long time until their was a dramatic change of situations.
Well, just forget the above story. What I want to say is that it is quite interesting to know that such conversation through sign languages is an age old practice. I modern terminology, this is what we call
?flirting?.
However, the word flirting has a number of interpretations. According to some, flirting is purely fun. Without any intention of indulging into a long drawn relationship people converse with each other as if they are romantically interested. Whereas, some others opine that flirting is often, or perhaps always, an introduction to a new relationship. Sometimes, people do flirt without even being aware of it. Well, let me explain that point. In my college days, I fell in love with a young professor. It was something like ?love at first sight?. Every guy used to get mad about her. I used to wake up every morning and dressed up quite like a Hollywood star. Before leaving the house, I would make sure that
I looked the most handsome guy in my class. I wanted to impress her without even knowing the reason. It was only when I heard about her engagement with another male professor, I felt a lump of stone in my heart and realized about my feelings for her.
Most of the time flirting involves conversing in such a fashion when the apparent meaning of a remark may be quite casual whereas the meaning implied may be romantically suggestive.
So, as I was saying, flirting is an age old practice. One can say it is an age old tradition. It is a tradition of bringing two minds together. Flirting existed in past and it exists at present. It is only the rituals that has changed. In remote past, people flirted only with eyes. After some decades, flirting had the essence of ?flirting conversations?. But it was usually the man, who would talk and the lady would be the silent listener. When the man praised her for her beauty, she would only blush and let the man get a glimpse of her pink cheeks. But such definition of flirting has undergone certain changes. Now a days flirting involves other external requirements like hitting the disc together and chatting at pubs. But basically, flirting still involves certain protocols. Flirting begins when two people interact more that what passes between words and when you speak more with your eyes than with your mouth. And gradually such interactions makes you feel more and more attached to that person which ultimately culminates into love.
But the above may not hold true for every one. Sometimes you flirt with a number of persons and want to derive pleasure from all such flings. Such instances equalize the word ?flirting? with ?cheating?.
However, according to some individuals it is nothing wrong to get indulged in something they call ?harmless flirting?. I personally know of a man, who went to his son's school to attend a meeting held between parents and teachers. When he met the head mistress of his son, the latter complained about the poor grades secured by the boy. As a result of which he recollected some memories of his own boyhood and ultimately the conversation ended with the man narrating some romantic memories of his college years. This reveals the psychology of a normal human being.
One can never deny that he or she has flirted at some point of life or the other.
Surprisingly the preference of the flirting partner changes over time. When you are young you would be mesmerized by the charms of older girls. And their matured beauty would make you crazy. As a man grows older, he flirts with women of same age who appear to be more sensible and thus more compatible. Finally when you would be forty you would prefer flirting with gals who are at least twenty five years younger than you.
In a way, we conclude that whatever may happen on this earth, flirting continues to remain forever.
Our ancestors flirted, we do flirt and our future generations would also continue this age old practice.

When we watch television along with our friends and they begin discussing eating disorders or obesity in the United States, we usually shake our heads and laugh at the stupidity of it all. Of course, we are sitting with a Big Mac in our right hand, a huge bag of fries in the left, and the chocolate shake is stuck between our knees waiting to be consumed We probably have a good chance of being a member of the 65% of Americans who are clinically obese. But still we choose to ignore it.
That is, until we look at some of the facts:
- The most common eating disorders are considered to be chronic illnesses that very little are known about, in addition to being misdiagnosed.
- In America these major eating disorders are anorexia nervosa, bulima nervosa, and binge eating - all being on the rise worldwide.
- More than 90% of people with eating disorders are women.
- This number of women has doubled to at least 5 million in the past 3 decades.
- Eating disorders are one of the key health issues that affect young women today.
- If we would begin to eat healthy, $71 billion per year in medical costs, lost workdays or productivity, and premature deaths would be prevented.
Physical, psychological, and social problems result from eating disorders, with people obsessed with weight gain, inappropriate eating behaviors, and worrying about their body image all the time. In America, over 80% of women are dissatisfied with their bodily appearance. Because of this, depression may occur along with anxiety, substance abuse, heart problems, or mentally ill deaths. About 18.8 million Americans have depression.
Eating disorders occur in 8,000,000 people in the United States whether they are rich or poor with 10 out of 100 of that number being women. Eating disorders usually begin in the teen years with 15% girls and 14% boys. The average American woman is 5'4" and weighs 160 pounds. And where does all that weight come from? Let's look at the eating habits.
In the magazine, Food Technology, in the article "What, When, and Where America Eats" by A. Elizabeth sloan, statistics show that in 2005, 75% Americans ate at home but the number of meals prepared there were only 58%, as compared to 64% in 2003. Dinners made from "scratch" were only 32% of the evening meals: 26% of those meals were made from convenience foods, while 17% used restaurant/supermarket take-out. Restaurant meals accounted for 23% of the meals.
Looking at the "eating out vs eating in" statistics in 2005, Americans were more apt to eat out than stay in, with the consumption of 80 meals per person being eaten at restaurants.
