Alone On New Years

    View:
All right. The parties are over and the dishes are put away. The leftovers are gone. It is January 2 and you are just getting up (unless it was YOUR turn to walk the dog?sorry). What is the first thought that comes into your head? Your New Year's resolution, of course. And I bet it goes like this: "today I start the (fill in the blank) diet, and THIS time it is going to work!"

Before you get started, may I make a rather unusual request? Why not make your new diet a "non" diet? That's right; why not give up dieting for the New Year? You already know diets don't work because you have a long history of being on and off diets. You have never been able to keep the weight off which makes you feel lousy about yourself, right? So why not try something new this year? How about making your New Year's resolution discovering how to become "at peace with food"?

Perhaps I should explain a bit.

Let's face it-diets do NOT work. Or to put it another way, all diets work: while you are on them. The problem is once you go ON a diet, eventually you go OFF that diet, and the weight just comes back, right? So, think about what would happen if you stopped dieting? Allow yourself to give it a moment's thought.

Is it scary? Probably. You are so used to following a diet, being told (by a piece of paper, a television personality or the latest diet book) what to eat, and when to eat it. Now, you have to throw all that away. What's going to happen?

At first, you may gain a little weight. Why? Because you are so used to depriving yourself of the foods you love that when you take away that restriction, it's all you want to do. But guess what? When you understand you can eat dark chocolate (OK, my favorite, not necessarily yours) anytime you want, you find yourself reaching for it only when you are truly hungry for dark chocolate. You won't be grabbing it because you are angry, or depressed, but because you are really hungry for-dark chocolate. But more significantly, you discover you are satisfied with less chocolate.

One of the many problems with dieting is that you have been depriving yourself for so long that you are afraid to trust your own judgment about what is right for you. You have developed such a difficult relationship with food that you no longer know what it feels like to be hungry.

Becoming "at peace with food" is a journey that involves developing a new relationship with food. Instead of being marked by frustration and disappointment, by fear and competition between you and the food you eat, food takes its place as one of the many activities in your life, along with family, friends, working and being active. And, like these other activities, it becomes pleasurable.

Becoming at peace with food is learning to trust yourself again-to make the right choices for yourself. It results in no longer fearing food, but loving food and all the activities related to cooking, eating, and living.

Let's start this New Year by accepting ourselves, becoming at peace with ourselves, and at peace with food.

Good luck and have a happy new year.
Alone On New Years
The first two weeks of December are a whirlwind of activity, most people are trying to finish up their work for the year or get ready for next year. Everyone wants to get as much as possible done so that they can take last two weeks of December off. The world seems to stop from December 15 through the New Year.

Thing is, the world does NOT stop — especially the media. Everyone is on vacation, but newspapers still need to fill up space, radio and TV stations are still broadcasting. Traditional wisdom was that you shouldn't try to reach people over the holidays. However, with the advent of e-mail, blackberries and a 24 hour news cycle, reporters are staying more connected. The end of December is a terrific time to pitch the media. They are looking for content. Also, people are home and reading the papers more. Here are some tips for successful holiday pitching.

1. Make your pitch relevant to the holidays if you can. For example, a wellness coach could write about holiday stress and weight gain. A virtual assistant could write about how they help their clients get ready for the holidays. Alternatively, you could write articles about January topics such as health, organization and/or New Year's resolutions. Remember tips sheets are valid news. Old blog posts and articles and sometimes easily be turned into press releases.

2. Instead of just sending out a press release, also consider pitching the reporter directly. Read the publication and email the reporter that covers your topic. Comment on the stories you have read. Ask how you can help them, suggest some possible story ideas. Directly e-mailing the reporter is probably the best way to get coverage.

3. Send out your press release. Even though reporters don't prefer press releases, search engines love them. Send your release to free press release sites. Also, don't forget to post your release to your own website.

3. Nobody wants to work THAT hard toward the end of the year. So, be prepared. Have a well written article ready, along with visuals if you have them. Be sure that you have a decent headshot to give the reporter if they ask. Let the reporter know that you have visuals, but don't send them unless they ask.

4. Include a call to action in your release. Do you have an upcoming program in January? A new product? Be sure to mention it in the last paragraph of your release. Include a link to your website and contact information to be published in the article.

5. Thank the reporter for publishing your article. Your holiday pitch could be the start of a great relationship with your local media.
