In the world of business, there is always someone who has to take the lead, who has to make sure that the operation runs smoothly. In the merchandising field, that person is called a branch manager. Most of us are familiar with the term as it applies to our bank, but there are sometimes retail establishments that also utilize the term ?branch manager? for the person in charge of operations within a particular ?branch? of a chain.
In the merchandising field, a branch manager's function is quite similar to that of a retail store manager. In fact, their functions mirror one another save for the titles. Why the difference in terminology? Perhaps to avoid confusion for the customers. After all, we think of our bank as having branches, but we don't think of different locations of the grocery store, department store, music store, bookstore, or even the eateries as having ?branches.? In addition, many of those chains are franchised, so in essence, they are different locations and different businesses compared to a bank that has different locations that fall under the same corporate management and charter.
In most establishments, the job of the branch manager is to take charge of the entire operation of his branch, making sure that everything runs smoothly. For the branch manager of a bank or other financial institution, that involves scheduling of employee work hours, overseeing training, hiring and firing, assuring that proper procedures are followed, and reporting to upper management any problems or providing reports and updates as required by company protocol.
The branch operations manager may report directly to the human resources manager, or there may also be a district manager to whom the branch manager reports. The chain of command within the retail and merchandising chain makes it seem as though there is an endless store of upper management, and in some cases, that does appear to be the case. For the branch manager, that makes it seem as though he is being watched from all angles, and in essence, that is what he is facing. The future of the branch is in the hands of its manager, and if he fails, so does his branch, and that makes him look inefficient and incompetent to his upper management. It is also the branch manager's responsibility to order, organise, and set prices at his individual location. One must be aware, though, that in this occupation, one must be willing to transfer to another location, and in some operations, managers are routinely moved around to allow them to learn the operation of the company in various localities.
