The concept of the bunk bed is a space conservation theory that allows for one bed to be placed or bunked on top of another one. The main considerations for choosing a bunk bed are the needs, the type, the price and the construction. Some of the more economical bunk beds are cost savers because you have to put them together yourself. The safety of these bunk beds can be significantly compromised if they are not completely assembled correctly. This factor cannot be emphasized enough.

The choice of bunk beds should be for children who are age appropriate. As a rule, children under the age of six should not be placed in the top bunk to sleep or play since this poses a falling hazard. Likewise, the top bunk should always have a safety rail across the front of the bunk so that a sleeping child does not fall off during the night.
