New security rules for carry on baggage means packing differently for your trip. Even the clothing you wear to go through airplane security should be well planned. All metal such as belt buckles, jewelry, even under wire bras should be packed and not worn. You want to sail through security as comfortably and quickly as possible. Your shoes must be removed, and even pocket change will trigger the security alarm. It's easier to leave your watch and belt in your carry bag until you are through security. The machines are super sensitive and any metal can slow down the screening process.



Your carry on case has to be packed with the new security rules in mind. You no longer can bring liquids or gels on the plane with you. Keep in mind that toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant can only be placed in your regular baggage. The exception for most flights is one lipstick and the small amount of liquid in your contact lens case. If you require medication on the flight, you'll need a doctor's note and prescription. Additionally, you can only carry the amount you need for the actual duration of the flight on the plane. As a precaution, be sure to check with the airline you are using a few days prior to the trip as security rules may change.

Use the mesh or clear packing cubes to make the security searches go quicker and easier. Don't over pack your bags, as it may be difficult to repack when everything has been moved or shuffled. Be aware of the new regulations and follow them so you won't hold up agents doing their job. Do not lock your bags unless you are using the approved TSA locks. Make sure you can handle or wheel your cases yourself. The lines are long and you may have to go through more than one security area. You'll make the whole process easier if your bags are manageable. Have your photo ID, passport if necessary, and boarding pass easily accessible. There are identification cases you can wear around your neck for airline travel and these come in very handy and will not slow down the security process.

You can and should carry your jewelry on board with you. Your laptop can also be carried on board. Reading material for your trip, and crackers or cookies can be brought on the plane. It's a good idea to pack your shoes in the carryon, because you are now packing your cosmetics in your baggage. Placing shoes or bulky sweaters in the carryon case will give you some extra room in the suitcase to accommodate the toiletries. Otherwise, you will need to plan on bringing a larger suitcase or taking less clothing.

If you were planning on only using a carryon bag, check with your hotel about purchasing toiletries. Some hotels will supply toothpaste, etc., and have inexpensive travel sized items readily available. Find out if there is a shop in the hotel or nearby where cosmetics can be obtained. You can also send your personal items ahead, but be sure to check with your hotel because some will charge for package service.
