Color tones: Plan on colors that convey a warm feeling, such as creams, whites, pale blues, or pale greens. Try and stay away from the bolder blues, oranges or reds, as they are "busy" colors and take away from the atmosphere you're trying to promote.



Furnishings: The furniture should be comfortable and cosy; and it should convey the type of room that you'd like to come back to after a day on the slopes. Big overstuffed chairs, ottomans, plush pillows, and an afghan or two draped over the sofa. The furniture doesn't even have to match perfectly, just have enough in common that all the pieces fit in. Natural wood furniture can also make a nice accent, such as a pine coffee table or bookshelf. Use pieces where you won't mind if someone puts their feet on the table; it should reflect comfort, not perfection.

In the bedroom look for large wooden beds and big puffy down blankets to keep you warm. Add a faux fur throw rug beside the bed and you're good to go.

Accessories: Less is more; keep the accessories to a minimum by adding some family photos candles or ski related pieces. Try to use natural materials like pottery, wood, stone or rustic crockery for added warmth. Earthenware bowls and wooden carvings and mirrors with wood frames fit in nicely. For a splash of color, try a natural flower bouquet or a bowl filled with apples, strawberries or multi-colored peppers. Place a large basket on the floor and stuff it with magazines. Place a small wine rack on the buffet with glasses handy, ready to be used.

Lighting: The lighting should be calming and subtle. Track lighting placed strategically throughout the room and a couple of large table lamps work well.

Once completed, this should be a home that makes you want to curl up in front of the fireplace with a hot chocolate, and where your guests won't hesitate to put their feet on the coffee table. Maybe you'll even feel like you've brought the weekend chalet home for awhile.
