When choosing materials there are so many to choose from that the decision can become overwhelming. As simplistic as it may seem, begin by looking at magazines that feature the type of home you want. This will give you a direction for you to take your project. It will also give you a visual reference so that you can choose materials and colors. Visit the local home building supply store. This will give you a good idea of what is available and the average cost per square foot for materials before installation costs.

When it comes to bathrooms and kitchens there are more decisions to be made than in almost the rest of the home. Part of these decisions will concern the cabinetry and the type of materials to use for countertops. Countertops can be relatively inexpensive or the most expensive item that will be purchased for the home. Materials chosen will depend a great deal on your budget.

At the very low end of the cost continuum there is laminate. This material comes in a huge variety of colors and patterns. Some of its negative aspects are that it chips, cracks, is easily scratched, and it does not withstand heat. Placing a hot pot on laminate will cause it to burn, blister and crack.

Ceramic tiles are only slightly more costly and wear well for many years. The ceramic comes in a nearly unlimited selection of colors and sizes. The only draw-back is that ceramic tiles will crack under an impact and they tend to mildew near areas with high moisture. This can be eliminated with regular cleaning.

Near the high end of the price range there is stainless steel. While this type of material is not for everyone, stainless has many positive features. It does not chip, peel, crack or burn. Cleaning after each prevents germs, bacteria, and other types of harmful organisms from growing. Stainless steel will provide many years of use.

Granite is perhaps the most expensive material that can be used. It will cost approximately ten thousand dollars for the average home, which has a countertop area of about ninety square feet. This all natural stone does not withstand heat well, stains and must be resealed at least once a year. This material will outlive the home.
