Acoustics is the connection between music and physics. In fact, internal acoustics is the reason that most instruments work. The didgeridoo is an instrument that originated in Northern Australia. It is also known as the didjeridu, the yidaki or the yiraki. The didgeridoo is a simple wooden tube. It is typically 1.2 to 1.5 meters long. It is created by termites hollowing it out and wax is placed around the lip of the mouthpiece to protect the player's mouth and to allow for the tube's opening to be completely covered and sealed which the instrument is being played. It is only capable of playing a single note but has a large range of vibrations capable of changing that note's tone and cadence.
So far, the didgeridoo has many characteristics in common with most brass instruments. What makes the didgeridoo different however, is the use of the vocal chords in creating the sound and the acoustics of the instruments itself. Similarly to brass instruments, the didgeridoo is simply a closed pipe. However, the way the sound waves moved in the instrument is totally different from the way they move within a brass instrument.
The player produces a sound wave with his lips and that sound wave moves into the instrument. However, the way in which the sound is made by the player sends the sound wave backwards into the vocal tract as well. The human vocal tract then acts as a “resonator” changing the sound as it travel s back out of the vocal tract and down into the instrument. The didgeridoo player controls the resonating qualities of her vocal tract by changing the shape of the tract and the placement of the tongue. It is easy for even a beginner to make these sounds, but an experienced didgeridoo player must learn circular breathing in order to develop the technique to create other sounds above the steady primary drone. Circular breathing allows the player to bring new air into his mouth and separate it from the main respiratory tract. In this way it does not affect the drone or the acoustics of the didgeridoo.
In many ways, the didgeridoo provides an ideal subject for the study of acoustics in musical instruments. The simplicity of the instrument itself as well as the unimpeded views from the bottom of the instruments all physicists to study the air waves and the complicated manipulation of space that occurs inside the instrument with exceptional freedom.

Different types of yoga practice call for different types of breathing, so it is important to note from the beginning that there is no one right way to breathe in yoga. If, in your yoga practice, your goal is total relaxation then your breathing should reflect that. This means long deep breaths meant to slow your heart rate and allow you to fully relax into the yoga pose. Here are a few tips:
* The diaphragm is where the breath originates in yoga and in everyday life. When you breathe in, your stomach puffs slightly because your diaphragm is filling with air. When you breathe out, your stomach flattens as your diaphragm empties itself of air. When you breathe, be sure that your stomach is moving, that you aren't restricting this movement in any way.
* It's important to relax every muscle in your chest, your face, your neck, your shoulders ? even your jaw ? in order to benefit from a relaxing breath in yoga. One way to do this is to clench the body part in question and then let go entirely. You may not even realize that your muscles are locked until you try to contract them.
* Keep your breaths smooth and easy during your yoga practice. Everyone breathes at their own natural rate, but becoming conscious of your breath does not mean controlling it in any way. Notice your breath and relax into your own natural rhythm.
* Breathing faster, in and out, is a natural reaction to stress or excitement. It stands to reason then, that relaxing breath in yoga should accentuate the exhalation. Breathe in naturally and make sure that your exhalation is longer than your inhalation and fully empty your diaphragm and lungs of air.
* Pausing between breaths will allow you to relax even further in yoga. No need to rush through your relaxation.
* When you breathe, feel the oxygen in the lungs and visualize it reaching every extremity, every toe and finger. Let your whole body enjoy the relaxing breath in your yoga practice.
When you learn how to breathe, you will find that it comes naturally in your yoga practice and in time, will continue in your everyday life.
