There are many hobbyists and amateurs in the world of printmaking who may assert to produce authentic giclee art prints, but don't be fooled. In 2001, the Giclee Printers Association (GPA) was founded to standardize and acknowledge true giclee printmakers. The mission of the GPA is to define industry standards and educate consumers. The GPA sets apart professional printers from printers who are not accountable to any defined standard. GPA recognition gives artists and consumers confidence in the value of the product they are buying. There are currently two designations granted to members of the GPA: TruDecor and TruGiclee. These are both trademark symbols of consistency and quality that the consumer should have confidence in.



Today, the first designation the GPA awards is TruDecor. Artists who display this trademark cater to the larger d'cor market of giclee art prints. To qualify as a TruDecor printmaker, one must meet four standards. First, the reproduction process can bear no trace of the technology used to create it. Second, all products used in the art reproduction must be disclosed by the printer. Third, the printer must be the subject of a highly regarded reputation by their peers. And the fourth criteria expects the printmaker to bear an oath that pledges to educate their consumers on TruDecor, and continuously showcase the TruDecor trademark wherever and whenever possible.

The other designation printmakers may be given is TruGiclee. This trademark is a niche market title used by giclee expert printers who serve the upper end of the digital fine art market. The TruGiclee standard is only assigned to those who are producing prints for the top of the giclee fine art print market. They must follow a rigorous, nine-point standard that exceeds those displaying the TruDecor symbol. The nine standards are: Being able to perfectly reproduce authentic artwork, having a reproduction process which bears no evidence of the technology used, the printer abides by archival standards that rival that of a collectable fine art print, the reproduction exudes the highest quality product available to the market, the printer fully discloses the supplies used in their art reproduction, the printer enjoys a generally recognized reputation for honesty and integrity amongst his or her customers and peers, the artisan producing (or supervising the production of the work) has been certified as a Master Printer by the G.P.A., the printing company participates in an continuous research and development effort to enhance their craft and the G.P.A., and they must honor an oath to continuously display the TruGiclee trademark and inform their patrons on TruGiclee.
