There are two ways to add traditional extensions. You can add extensions by sewing or bonding. Unlike other hair extension methods, fusion is preferred because it is just about undetectable when completed properly. Not only are the extensions hard to spot, but the bond where the hair is attached is virtually invisible. If your hair is dry and brittle, however, fusion may not be the best method of extensions for you. They are attached with chemicals and can cause the hair to break.



The fusion application can be summed up into two categories: ''hot-fusion'' and ''cold-fusion''. Hot-fusion is the most common method, and uses hot glue to attach the extension hair to your natural hair. With this method of application, your fusion style can last up to four months.

Cold-fusion is preferred over the hot-fusion method because the glue used to attach the hair can make the extensions feel stiff and unnatural. With this method, the hair is attached either by a keratin-based polymer or melted wax pebbles. If you're afraid hot-fusion might damage your hair, this method may be right for you. The cold-fusion method allows your extensions to last up to six months.

If you're considering getting fusion extensions, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Hot-fusion can damage even the healthiest of hair, causing it to thin out and/or break. If this is an issue, you can always go with the cold-fusion method. Make sure to ask for your stylist's opinion if you're unsure

2. $500-$2,000 is what you should expect to pay for fusion extensions. Other factors can raise or lower the price, such as your location, length of hair, and the quality of extension hair used.

3. The glue used to attach the hair comes in a variety of colors. Make sure to discuss this with your stylist so the two of you can come to an agreement on which glue is best.

4. Wash your hair thoroughly before getting fusion extensions. Don't use conditioners, creams, pomades, gels, or other styling products. These products can leave residue on your hair that will weaken the fusion bond.

5. If you have fusion hair extensions, you must be careful when using heated styling tools such as ceramic irons and curling irons. Placing these appliances too close to the bond can melt the adhesive and cause the extension to slip out.

When done properly, fusion can result in natural-looking hair that is longer and thicker than your normal hair. Caring for fusion extensions is easy as well; just wash, condition, and style like you normally would. Extra care is recommended when using hot styling tools around the bond itself. Make sure to visit your stylist bi-weekly for maintenance.
