Buddhist meditation techniques are some of the oldest practiced forms of meditation in the world. The universally known symbol of meditation has become a picture of Buddha in repose, carried away by the deep meditation in which he is engaged. Attaining the same peace and enlightenment suggested by the pose of Buddha is something that anyone can pursue. One does not have to follow the Buddhist faith or engage in any other Buddhist practices to use Buddhist meditation techniques.
Buddhist meditation techniques are designed so that the practitioner is able to separate their physical bodies from their conscious minds in order to cast their minds to a higher plateau of existence and thus receive enlightenment in their lives. To do so, one must leave behind the toils and worries of everyday life and instead pursue the higher path to achieving peace and understanding with and in the world around.
There are several main types of Buddhist meditation that you can pursue when you are looking to achieve peace, relaxation and understanding in your own life. The first technique is called the Mindfulness of Breathing. During this type of Buddhist meditation, the practitioner must so fully relax their physical body that the only function they concentrate on is their own pattern of breathing. But putting an entire being's focus just on the repetitions of breathing in and breathing out and breathing in and breathing out, one can successfully move to a higher plane of consciousness where the physical pains of life are not intrusive.
Another main type of Buddhist meditation includes Contemplation of Impermanence. During this type of Buddhist meditation, the practitioner must direct their mind to reflect upon the complete impermanence of life, which cycles through death and living and death and living continuously as a matter of sustaining mankind. By contemplating the mysteries of the impermanence of life, practitioners of Buddhist meditation are able to remove themselves from every day worries and instead exist at a conscious level where they are simply filled with the power of existing.
One of the most commonly used practices of Buddhist meditation includes visualization. During visualization, you will pick an object to picture in your own mind. The object can be nearly anything at all, but it must be something that you can visual in an all-consuming matter. During visualization, you will leave behind all conscious thoughts and all conscious words and simply focus on a mental picture of your chosen object. When you do so, you will be able to move beyond the physical plane and instead to a state where you become at one with the world around you.
Guide To Buddhist Meditation
Meditation is very common within many religions around the world and has been practised for thousands of years. Buddhism is probably the most well known religion that practises meditation and Nibbbana is the ultimate goal for a Buddhist. This is attained by years of practising Buddhist mediatation. Nibbana is a state of mind and not a physical thing that can be held, bought or seen. Nibbana is attained by reaching the end of suffering and craving and this is the final goal for someone who practises Buddhist meditation.
Although being a good person, being kind to others and doing good deeds is important to make you a nice person it will not help you to obtain Nibbana. Nibbana is only attained through Buddhist meditation and following the Buddhist writings and scriptures. To reach total enlightenment you not only need to study the scriptures but more importantly, you need to implement and understand the actual practice. There are two different types of Buddhist meditation that are used in the Buddhist religion. These are Vipassana and Samatha .
Samatha translates to mean tranquillity or calmness. This is a state that the student is trying to reach whilst meditating. This is done by calming the mind and focusing on one specific thing. There are many things that can help with Samatha meditation like a flickering candle or water. The person meditating can concentrate on the candle flame or water and block out all other outside interferences. Whilst focusing your mind you should also use anapanasati. This is the method of concentrating on your breathing. If you do not have any candles or water then you can just use your breathing to help concentrate your mind. Samatha is more than just focusing; however, they need to get rid of the five vices of sloth, sensual desire, ill will, anxiety and doubt. When this has been reached through this form of Buddhist meditation, immense happiness is gained but, Nibbana still has not been achieved. This is where vipassana is required.
Vipassana is very different from Samatha but is still a vital part of Buddhist meditation and reaching the goal of enlightenment. This system is all about looking at life with a very basic outlook. You need to look at things as they are and you need to acknowledge each thing that you do. If you are sweeping the floor, you need to acknowledge to yourself that you are sweeping the floor. This is the beginning stage of vipassana which is bare awareness. By becoming completely aware of everything you do at all times and by focusing your mind by using Samatha you can attain total enlightenment which is the final goal of anyone who is interested in Buddhist meditation.
Most practioners of Buddhist meditation spend their whole lives trying to attain enlightenment, so if you have just started, do not be disheartened if you do not attain the end goal within a short period of time. Buddhist meditation needs to become part of your life and how you live your life. Although it is a long road to reach the end, enlightenment can be the ultimate spiritual fulfilment.
