Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitches

    View:
This really a big part of the traditional American Dream isn't it? Quality family time with a recreational vehicle, getting away from civilization, but doing it in the comfort of a brand new travel trailer. I don't think it could get much better.

There's only one problem. It's a windy day. When you were picking up your new travel trailer at the dealership the other day it never occurred to you just how scary it could be to tow your nice long trailer down the highway in a serious cross wind.

Dealing with the wind is a fact of life if you're going to be any kind of RV enthusiast, so make sure you understand how to tow safely in it.

It really all comes down to the length of your trailer relative to the length of the vehicle you're using to tow it with. Think of it this way - it's all about leverage. If your trailer is long relative to the wheelbase of the vehicle you're using to tow the trailer, you could be in for an interesting vacation.

A travel trailer has a broad profile in the wind, so if mother nature is blowing hard, or if you're getting passed by tractor trailers at high speeds, your trailer basically acts as a sail. It's not unlike carrying a piece of four foot by eight foot plywood.

If you've ever had that experience you know what I'm talking about. The plywood acts like a sail and it can drag you all over the place if you don't know how to handle it.

The same way it takes strength to handle that plywood in the wind, it takes a long wheelbase on your tow vehicle to handle the tug of a relatively long travel trailer. If you've got a twenty-three foot boxy trailer and you're pulling it with a small SUV, chances are you're going to get jerked around quite a bit.

But, that same small SUV would have no problem at all with a small folding tent trailer. It's all relative.

As a general guideline I'd suggest that you could pull a trailer approximately twenty feet long as long as your vehicle has a wheelbase of at least 110 inches. So that's about nine feet of wheelbase to handle twenty feet of trailer.

If you want to get a longer trailer, I'd recommend that you have at least four inches of wheelbase for each additional foot of trailer length. That way you're always making sure to keep the ratio of trailer length to wheelbase high enough.

One last thought is you should not only consider the total length of the trailer, but also the distance from the coupler (or tongue) to the axle of the trailer. There will be a big difference in stability for a trailer where that coupler to tongue distance is really short, compared to one where it's really long.
Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitches
Most of us may be familiar with a passenger car. Some of us who have been driving cars for some years also have the knowledge that the space constraints are much in a passenger car. For example, you will not be able to load your bike or motorcycle in your car and travel long distance. Passenger cars have been provided ambient storage spaces but in certain scenarios even such storage spaces might tend to be futile and it is in such scenarios that the use of hitch carriers is employed. We shall be looking into more of this innovative mechanism in the coming passages.

There are no specific word definitions for hitch carriers. It is often seen as an extension to a vehicle, which is usually fitted towards the rear portion of one's vehicle. With the help of hitch carriers, virtually anything can be taken from one place to another without renting a truck or a van. In other terms, the storage and the transportation space of a vehicle can be increased with the help of hitch carriers. In addition, this is one of the prime reasons why an average American household mostly prefer these.

?Virtually anything? is limited by the engine capacity of the vehicle in question. Vehicles with larger engines will be able to pull more loads and vice versa. It is inefficient to fit a large hitch carrier on a normal passenger car. If you are owning something in the terms of a sports utility vehicle then the scenario changes. The bottom line is that you should seek expert help before opting for hitch carriers, so that you might not repent on a later date about your foolish decision. Surely, vehicles are designed to pull loads, but sometimes when the threshold is reached, even such robust engines are known to give up.

There are various types of hitch carriers the main two being a bike hitch carrier and cargo hitch carriers. The utility of the carrier can be learnt from those two terms itself. The former is used to carry bikes to inaccessible places and the latter is mainly employed to carry cargo ? of any form or type, the only limitation being the weight of the cargo. According to the needs various other varieties of hitch carriers are also available in the market and choosing the best among them can be easy or cumbersome depending on your expertise in the field.

One of the best places to start researching about hitch carriers is in your vehicle's dealer shop itself. They have been fixing such arrangements to various other customers and will be well versed in choosing the best hitch carriers that are most suitable for your vehicle. If you are opting for a third part hitch carrier, then also it is better as well as safer to seek the expertise of professionals. The sales clerk might be eager to close a deal, but if you foolishly choose the wrong hitch carrier, you are virtually stuck with it.
