How To Apply Tanning Lotion

    View:
So you're ready for a great tan but aren't sure of the best way to use tanning lotion. Whether tanning during vacation, in your own back yard, by a pool, or in a tanning salon, tanning lotion is essential to have a great tan while maintaining good skin health. But using tanning lotion isn't enough; you must apply it correctly to reap the full benefits.

First, choose the proper tanning lotion. Look for lotions with a high SPF (sun protection factor) if possible. These will allow you to tan safely without risk of sunburn and overexposure to UVA and UVB rays from the sun. It's also a good idea to buy after-sun or after-tan lotion to help minimize peeling, replenish the skin with nutrients, and make your tan last longer. If you plan to swim or tan on a float in the pool, be sure to choose waterproof tanning lotion, or reapply lotion after every swim.

Before Application

Before applying tan lotion, wash or exfoliate your skin to remove any dead skin. This will allow you to spread the tan lotion on evenly. Be sure to have all the essentials on hand: eye protection (high SPF protective sunglasses), lightweight, comfortable clothing to wear after tanning, shoes to protect your feet on hot sand or pavement, a radio or CD player to pass the time quickly, and a comfortable chair or blanket.

Applying Tanning Lotion

Begin applying the tan lotion on a small area. Then rub on generously and evenly until all areas are covered. Rub on tanning lotion in a swirling manner instead of a straight line to maximize coverage. Ask a friend or companion to apply the lotion to your back. Don't forget about the back of your legs, your feet, and the very delicate spots such as eyes, face, neck (and back of neck), nose, shoulders, and ears. Use lip balm to protect your lips while tanning. For delicate or hard-to-reach areas, use a sponge to apply the lotion.

Reapplication during the Day

Even when using waterproof tan lotion, you may need to reapply it a couple of times during the day to prevent sunburn. It can wear off from sweating, swimming, or showering after swimming in the pool or ocean water. If you change from a swimsuit to regular clothing, your clothing might also rub off or absorb some of the tanning lotion. So reapply the tanning lotion if you plan to tan again later in the day.

Tanning Lotion and Children

Children have very delicate skin and most can get sunburned quickly. Apply tanning lotion generously and frequently to children's skin. Be sure to use tanning lotion or sun block with SPF 15 protection or higher. To make life easier, there are some great children's tanning lotion and sunscreen products available such as spray-on lotions with various scents like grape or bubblegum. These are often easier to apply, especially on small children. For proper application, spray the lotion onto an area of the skin, then spread evenly with your hands to cover the entire area. Spray various spots until every exposed area of the body is covered.

Variety of Tanning Products Online

Today, you can find a variety of tanning lotions to meet every need on the Web. Designer skin tanning lotion is available in different brands. Or if you need cheap tan lotion, you can find great bargains at online tanning product stores. With any designer or discount tan lotion, be sure to read the ingredients and match the lotion with your particular skin type for proper protection.

Tanning safely enables you to enjoy the sun without worry of skin damage or sunburn. Apply your tanning lotion properly for a gorgeous tan this summer!
How To Apply Tanning Lotion
Every day, millions of dead skin cells are sloughed off or worn away from the surface of your skin. In fact, every 35 to 45 days, you have an entirely new epidermis. This is why tans from sunless- or self-tanning lotions will gradually fade -- as the dead cells are worn away, so is your tan. For this reason, most of these products suggest that you reapply the sunless- or self-tanner about every three days to maintain your tan.

Although gels, lotions or sprays that contain DHA are said to be the most reliable and useful, there are dozens of other types of products on the market. Tanning accelerators -- lotions or pills that usually contain the amino acid tyrosine -- claim that they stimulate and increase melanin formation, thereby accelerating the tanning process.

Hot Tips for Proper Application!

Wait AT LEAST 15 minutes before getting dressed (remember that self-tanner can stain clothes). Do not exercise or swim for at least three hours.

If you make a mistake and end up with streaky or dark areas of skin, consider using an exfoliant such as my 2% Beta Hydroxy Acid Liquid over those spots. Then, in the morning, manually exfoliate those areas with a wet washcloth. This should rub off any uneven stripes. Take special care with problem areas.

As an option for your hands (which can be particularly tricky to get looking natural) apply self-tanner as you would a moisturizer, but then quickly wipe your palms off on a slightly soapy washcloth. Then take a Q-tip dipped in cleanser, eye-makeup remover (one that is not greasy so it doesn't spread or smear), or nail polish remover and carefully use it to wipe around the nails and cuticle area and between your fingers. You can also use a makeup sponge to apply self-tanner to the back of your hands, tops of your feet, temples, and hairline. By holding the sponge deftly between two fingers, you only need to worry about preventing this small area from changing color.

Skin-care products such as AHAs, BHA, topical scrubs, Retin-A, and topical disinfectants can affect the self-tanner's action on your skin or even eliminate the color by exfoliating the surface skin cells (self-tanners only interact on the surface of skin). It is best not to apply these products the evening you apply a self-tanner. However, if you must do so, wait at least two to three hours before you do.

Reapply self-tanner as you feel the need. Generally it will start fading in about three to four days as the surface layers of skin shed.

It is important to tan correctly and we urge you to come find out more about self tanning! Learn about the common mistakes made and gather hot tips of looking totally fabulous!
