Many addictive and psycho-emotional behaviors are a result of psychological, physical, spiritual, and environmental issues in regard to the individual, and can be successfully treated utilizing a variety of clinical techniques combined with alternative methods. In some cases, medication management may be indicated and can be a helpful adjunct to the therapeutic process. Client success can also be improved if the client's belief system embraces holistic healing methods.
Rather than employing a directive and controlling approach that may produce a defensive attitude by the client and hamper the change process, indirective and metaphorical techniques allow the client to come to his/her own conclusion. This yields a more productive therapeutic result, not only in the clients' thinking, but in their behaviors, sobriety and recovery as well.
Below are a list of 15 steps to change perception, thinking and behavior:
1.Begin to open your mind to new concepts.
2.Question, rather than just accept what is being told.
3.Admit to new possibilities.
4.Acknowledge that not everything is either black and white.
5.Understand that what one may believe to be true may just be someone else's truth.
6.Adopt new ways of viewing one's own specific situation.
7.Recognize that people behave in the way that they think.
8.Explore philosophies and theories that may help to change the way one perceives.
9.Realize that what works for one may not work for all.
10.Show willingness to recognize a change in perception when it occurs.
11.Seek spiritual enlightenment and understanding.
12.Gain acceptance that the Mind, Body, Spirit, and Environment are all connected.
13.Gain acceptance that we all have an impact on one another and the environment and that in seeking healing for yourself, you are helping another.
14.Become aware of your impact/input on your immediate environment and the global environment.
15.Continually practice building awareness by reviewing your perceptions, thinking and behaviors.
Teaching clients to change their perceptions utilizing the Perception Therapy ? and Mind-Body-Spirit-Environment? approaches, addiction and emotional relapses do not have to occur or get in the way of recovery. People can live happy, healthy, and productive lives without living in fear that they will turn to dysfunctional thinking and behaviors at any moment. The occurrence of relapse is only a perception, not a reality. Anyone has the ability to change their perception, thinking, behavior and reality.
How To Change Perception
We've all heard the phrase, "You get more of what you focuson." In the Hawaiian shamanism system, known as Huna, theyteach the principle of blessing. For instance if you want tobecome a more creative individual every time you come acrosssomething that represents 'creativity' you would bless it.Let's say you were walking down the street and you saw anartist painting. You could verbally compliment him or youcould simply mentally bless his creativity with yourintention which could be something like, "This iscreativity, I bless him for it."
By doing this regularly you condition your mind to go in acertain direction: "Look for examples of creativity in theworld that I can bless." An interesting effect of thispractice is that the more you focus on finding positivequalities to bless, the more you discover!
In therapeutic settings clients often come along complainingof behaviours they don't like and want to get rid of. Now ifthe therapist were to have the focus of believing that theclients behaviour was indeed unnecessary he may focus onthis aspect and have the client discover where thisbehaviour started. Discovering why he has chosen to adoptthis behaviour and so on.
But what if the therapist had the focus of, "Every behaviourhas a positive intention behind it." Just with this shift indirection could result in a much more pleasant and usefulchange in the client. By discovering the positive intentionbehind behaviours, adding in new behaviours, choices andflexibility would more likely create a generative, positively focused direction for the clients mind to go in.
This kind of generative change-work tends to create a morepervasive shift in the clients model of the world becausethey have made a change that has added more choice andflexibility and so they think, "ahhh if I can add choices tothis area of my life, why not get more flexible in otherareas?!"
Another interesting point about directions is that it's morepowerful to setup a direction that is flowing, a process, rather than a static change. Think about the following andnotice which statement is more powerful, "I am confident",or "I am becoming more confident."
Because one of the minds natural functions is to go in adirection, change-work becomes more powerful if you set up aprocess as the direction. "I am confident" is static, whereas, "I am becoming more confident" is a process thatre-enforces itself.
Knowing this 'master key' can make your use of changetechnologies, such as the tools of Neuro-LinguisticProgramming (NLP) work all the more effectively.
So as you begin to think about the directions you want yourmind to go in, doesn't it just make sense to use tools thatre-program your mind to *automatically* go in the directionyou want to go in?
