Where is the horizon going to be? Divide your canvas into three parts. If your horizon is going to be near the top, you'll have lots of space to play with in the middle ground and fore ground. If your horizon is going to be near the bottom, you'll have more freedom with the background. The decision depends on what you want to focus on in your painting. For example, if you want to focus on the sunset in the background, then shift your horizon downwards.
Having done that, it also pays to pay a little attention to the general mood of the seascape painting. Is it going to be an angry mood? If so, you may want to consider drawing strong waves and apply warm colors such as red and orange. If you're going to go for a peaceful mood, work on the blends to keep the activity level down.
As you can probably tell by now, choosing the right painting style and the right colors will make or break your seascape painting. The color medium that you'll going to work with will also affect the outcome as well.
Since paint seascapes involve describing water, you'll have to choose a medium that allow you to create washes comfortably. Water colors, acrylic paints and oil paints will work create the necessary effects if you know how to work with them. It's also possible to draw a seascape painting using oil pastels but things can get a little messy with oil pastels.
When working with paints, try to work with thin washes so that you can work in layers. You'll most likely have to create a greenish or blueish effect for your waves. Color mixing will do the trick here. Also, a lot of white is required for the foam that the waves create as well as the highlights on the water.
Use a reference photo if you need to. Try it for a few times to get the hang of washes, and you're on your way to creating a great seascape painting.
How To Do Draw
The response came back with over 50%25 of the members surveyed revealing that they're actually over 50 years old, and has just began to start learning how to draw.
I find this rather interesting because why did these members wait until way past 50 before pursuing their passion? After all, many of them did communicate to me via email that they know deep within themselves that art is something that they've always wanted to pursue. But my question is, why the wait?
Well, one of the members replied and said that now that the kids have grown up, he now has more time to pursue his own interest. Lack of time has been cited as the number 1 reason as to why they didn't learn how to draw earlier.
But there's a more subtle reason behind the lack of learning how to draw duriing younger days. And that's a lack of believe that they would be able to make a decent living as a full time artist. For some reason, many artists are aware of this urge to be close to art deep within. As time passes, the urge gets stronger. The more the artist tries to resist, the worse it gets. Until finally, when free of financial commitments (to family, to children, to parents, etc), the artist feels free to pick up art. But by now, he or she is over 50 years old.
Still, what matters is that is it too late to learn how to draw at this age? You and I both know that the answer to this question is an obvious "no". It's never too late too learn how to draw. In fact, it's great news that the artist now pays attention to his feelings. He feels free and happy to draw.
I rejoice with these artists for only with this awareness will they consciously choose to learn how to draw. The more they draw, the more they become and the more they live. In learning how to draw, they have become artists.
