Generally speaking, it is very beneficial to set out on this new business as a second job. This usually will reduce the stress as you initiate this new opportunity. Down the road, if you are happy with the results, you can choose whether you will switch over to your profitable venture full time.

How To Work From Home

You may be like me and many other people who are fortunate enough to have a job where you work from home at least part of the time. Whether you telecommute or work for yourself, you may find that if you are sitting at home you have trouble focusing on getting your work done. If you are like me, you think more about the laundry that needs to be folded and the floors that need to be vacuumed than the pile of work sitting on your desk that you can actually get paid to do. Here are some ideas to help you (and me!) focus on your work and get in an actual work day at home.

1. Have a designated work space or area

If you have a room you can devote to be your work area great! If you only have a small space that accommodates your work, that's fine too. But make sure you have a place to do your work. This place should be free from distractions and if you need a quiet work place, you should be able to close the door.

2. Have specific work hours

Let your friends, spouse and children know that your work hours are xyz and that they can not interrupt you during that time, unless it's an emergency. These hours may vary from day to day depending on your schedule but if you set aside a specific time each day for working you might be more inclined to stick to the schedule.

3. Don't answer phone for personal calls

It never fails, you sit down all set to work and just get in the middle of something and the phone rings. You see on the caller I.D. that it's your neighbor across the street and you know she's calling to talk about the bake sale. You do NOT need to answer that phone! Let her leave a message and call her back after work hours. I've been known to park my car in the garage just so no one would know I was home!

4. Clean your house before hand

If your messy house or the stack of unpaid bills keep you from getting your work done, do it all before you begin your work day. This is what I do. On the nights before my work at home days, we tidy up the house, get the laundry done and vacuum. This way I can devote my time solely to working and I don't feel guilty about a floor the needs to be mopped.

5. Have everything you need available

Think ahead of time about what you'll need to use for the day and have it all at your disposal. Searching through the house for the stapler is a big time waster! Keep your regularly used supplied on your desk or in a container you can put away and take out when you need to work.
