Loft Beds And Bunk Beds

    View:
There are a lot of good reasons why you might choose to build your own bed, instead of buying one ready made. The most commonly cited reason, which may or may not be relevant to you, is the price. Building a bed tends to be much cheaper then buying one ready made, although if you buy second hand you can get a good, rugged bunk bed for under $150. You might be able to get a new one at that price, as well, but I seriously doubt that any bed you buy that cheaply will be well made enough to be worth having. As you know, if you want quality, it will come at a price... Unless you buy it from someone else.

On the other hand, if you would prefer not to buy a prebuilt bunk bed, it's not as hard as you might think it would be to build one for yourself. While you'll have trouble finding a cheap bunk bed new, it is easy to get hold of a bunk bed kit. Not only are they easy to find and cheap, but they are also easy to put together, and you can either buy the materials to make them yourself, or get a kit which comes with them.

First of all, as I've said, kits are not difficult to put together. Not completely without effort, of course, but you really don't need any woodworking experience, or even particular skill with tools. If you've bought a kit complete with materials, then you can just start putting it together, otherwise you'll need to go about and get some wood as well. Still, that shouldn't cause you any difficulty, as you can just use off the shelf lumber. Plus, the plans are always simple to follow.

And of course, constructing it yourself is the best way to ensure it meets your requirements. With something you buy, especially something wooden, you can never be entirely sure of the quality. However if you construct it yourself, you can test each part as you assemble it.

The second most popular reason, after the lower price, for building your own bed is that it's something fun for the whole family. A construction project, such as putting together a bunk bed, is an excellent activity to which both adults and children can contribute to. Of course, if you think your kids might not be interested, or you just don't want them involved, you can always build it yourself. Perhaps give it to them as a surprise gift. I know they'll be proud to be able to say to their friends, when asked where the bed came from, that "my dad built it for me". Or even more so, "I built it- with my dads help"!

As I've already mentioned, the only way to guarantee that you are getting exactly what you wanted is to put it together yourself. Whatever it is that you want in a bed, you may or may not be able to find for sale, but there's a good chance that whatever it is will not be perfect for you as it has to appeal to many different possibly customers. Of course, you need to be careful not to stray too far from the designs you've got, as a mistake made in constructing your bunk bed could result in a dangerous instability. So unless you really know what you're doing, it's best to choose a plan that is close to what you want and then alter it only slightly. Nevertheless, there is still plenty of room for imagination. When you build it yourself, you can color it how you like, using paints or stencils, and give it an appropriate pattern. Or even allow your kids to design how they want it to look, adding yet more fun to the construction.

There are a lot of plans available for you to choose from, so it shouldn't be too hard for you to find an appropriate one for you. The range available does not just cover the different types of bed itself, but also all sorts of accessories and alterations. For example, you could get one with some storage space, such as drawers underneath it, or in the case of a loft bed even a full closet! There are hundreds of variations, so just pick whichever you like the most, and then figure out what changes you want to make to it.

In the end, there are some situations where buying a bunk bed actually is the best solution. Obviously, if money is not an issue, then sure, go for it. On the other hand, it might be worth just buying a cheap bed as a short term solution, especially if you need it quickly, or will only be using it for a short time. A lower quality bed is not a good idea in the long run, as it will only break eventually, but for right now it could be worth it.

Building a bed, though, is not just about the cost. It's also about bringing you together as a family, and making a home that you can be proud of. It's about stamping your own personality and individuality as a family onto your furniture, so that you can look in your kids bedroom and think, I made that... no other child has a room quite like mine.
Loft Beds And Bunk Beds
The small size of the living area is the major issue for the dorm room decorator. When working with such a compact space, including pieces of furniture that double up in purpose and function increases the room's usable space. This way, you can use all the space of the room, from the floor (for storage) to the ceiling (for sleeping.) For example, you can pair a desk and a bed by using a loft bed. You can increase the storage space with a bunk bed. All these combinations offer tons of creative solutions for a smart student decorator.

A loft bed takes advantage of the room space under and above your bed. With a loft bed, you can use the space underneath to place a desk or even a futon; with a bunk bed, you get a roomy storage that can replace a chest of drawers. The available space can be used for useful shelves to house books, magazines or other items.

Loft and bunk bed units can be purchased in a store or built from scratch by a handy do-it-yourselfer. The space under the loft bed can be used in many ways. For example, you can arrange a secluded study area simply by adding an armchair, a bookcase and a lighting fixture. Bunk beds help save space doubling as storage, so you can get rid of your large chest of drawers. You can ?find? some space in bunk chairs that can hold extra clothes, linens, and bedding. Additional options that increase storage under a loft or bunk bed include adjustable pole shelving and filing modules available at IKEA.

If you don't want your dorm look like military quarters choose a favorite color scheme and introduce small elements of color throughout the dorm space. You can visibly eliminate clutter by storing your belongings in bank boxes or baskets which you can decorate with matching fabric or wallpaper.

If you're feeling more adventurous, inject some color into the room with paint. Choose a statement shade and create a focal point by painting one wall. Alternatively, if you have a small room, make the available space appear larger by choosing softer shades that coordinate with the existing room d'cor. One of the easiest ways to make a dorm appear relaxed and inviting is with lighting. Choose your lights appropriately depending on whether you want a soft glow or a bright, light space.

To liven up your loft bed you can use washable slipcovers in bright colors and easy to wash fabrics such as cotton-polyester mix. You can buy a matching set of covers for the extra seating space under your loft bed. You can buy a great throw to decorate your loft bed in a novelty store such as Pier 1 or even on a flea market.

When designing your dorm space around a bunk or loft bed, remember that even on a budget it is possible to create a tidy and uncluttered room where everything has a suitable place. No matter if you will be sharing a dorm room with a relative or friend, you still can maximize creativity, minimize clutter and help to create a one-of-a-kind dorm d'cor.
