Oak is one of the very popular hardwoods too. It is used for flooring, cabinets, furniture, and other projects. It is a very beautiful wood and it can match most of the furniture in your home. It is often used in a country style themed home, but it is very expensive too. It tends to be one of the most expensive types of wood on the market.

Then you have yellow, which is one of the most tallest trees grown in the U.S., is also a good hardwood to work with. You will find that it is less expensive then oak or walnut, but it still has the quality that you are looking for in a wood. You will find that it is used in many products like furniture, toys, sporting goods, and even some musical instruments. Beech wood is also available throughout the States and it too is used in many projects like boxes, baskets, flooring, and even doors. You will find that the key to using the beech wood is because it is so easy to paint or stain. The wood is very accepting.

You also have the look of hardwood lumber without the cost of hardwood by using hardwood plywood. A veneer is simply glued to particle board. This too is easy to work with and easy to stain. It doesn't warp that easy, however, it is durable. It could be exactly what you are looking for and you don't have to pay the high rates for this type of wood.

Keep in mind that the price should not really be something that holds you back. Most of the time you are going to be using the wood for smaller projects, but you could find many of the local stores have specials on these hardwoods and purchase expensive material at a steal.
