Even if it is a not so common cause for abdominal pain it is good to know that appendicitis, the inflammation of the appendix, is one of the most common digestive diseases. As we said earlier appendicitis is not the single cause for abdominal pain. Even so many parents are alarmed when their child develops the symptoms. In most of the cases they say that prompt medical attention is required.
About appendicitis it is good to know that there is no way to prevent it but with the help of the new technology, tests and antibiotics, this problem can be treated without any complications.
It is very important for you as a parent to be able to notice the difference between the usual symptoms of appendicitis and other similar conditions such as a stomachache or abdominal pain.
It is good to know that the symptoms of appendicitis usually start with a mild fever and a dull pain around the umbilicus. Along with these symptoms your child might develop vomiting, diarrhea or constipation. In time, while the condition evolves the pain from around the umbilicus will travel down to the lower right side of the abdomen.
You should see a doctor immediately if you suspect your child has appendicitis. The sooner you seek for medical care, the easier for them to treat your problem.
It is good to know that appendicitis is a digestive condition that is caused by the appendix blockage. The appendix is a tube-like tissue that is attached to the large intestine in the lower right side of the abdomen. The appendix usually opens in the large intestine but when it gets blocked the appendix swells and can easily get infected by bacteria.
It is recommended for the appendix to be removed because otherwise it can burst and spread bacteria and infection through the abdomen and may cause severe complications.
The most affected persons are aged between 11 and 20 years. Another statistic says that most cases of appendicitis occur between October and May. A history of appendicitis might increase the child's risk for illness especially when it comes to males.
It is recommended to see a doctor if you experience the following symptoms: a severe abdominal pain, especially in the lower right part of the abdomen, fever, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea, frequent urination, swollen or boated abdomen, especially for children.
If this condition goes untreated, the inflamed appendix can burst 24 to 72 hours after the symptoms begin. That it why, an immediate medical exam is needed after the symptoms develop.
