With each passing day, we are introduced to better models of two way radios, having more innovative features. Every new model introduced has a new feature accompanying it. All these innovative features have contributed to the increased usage and popularity of these radio instruments. People have started adopting it as commonly as a mobile phone.

The number of channels in two way radios differs depending upon the type of two way radios being used. The FRS (Family Radio Service) offers users 14 channels, while the GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) gives users 23 channels. Hybrid radios (a combination of FRS and GMRS radios) offers users the facility of 15 channels or more. In fact, the number of channels offered by a radio is directly proportional to its price; the more the channels the higher he price.

Other unique features available in two way radios these days are:

Battery Type: The battery of two way radios is designed for durability and endurance. Portability is also another factor; hence all devices have an internal battery. For users who use the radio less, there are AA and AAA alkaline batteries, but people who use the radios often can go in for Nickel Metal Hydride or Nickel Cadmium Batteries that can be recharged.

Weather Channels: Many radios these days have weather channels that provide users the weather news and forecasts by the official meteorological department. This feature is ideal for people who have to travel a lot for work, both within the country and abroad.

VOX: This feature makes the push button in two way radios redundant. Earlier, in order to speak, users had to push a button. But the voice activated system, or the VOX starts broadcasting the moment the user speaks in the direction of the radio. This feature is extremely useful when the user is engaged in some other task like driving, as it provides a hands free facility.

Rechargeable Two Way Radios

There are many different services offered in two way radio communications. Each service has its own purpose. Among the basic two way communication services are Citizens band radio operators, Amateur radio, Aeronautical radio and the general mobile radio service. In the private land mobile radio services public safety radio, special emergency radio and industrial radio are included. The citizens band radio operates at specific Megahertz, amplitude modulated or single sideband using shared assigned channels. The Citizens radio service more commonly called citizens band is a public non commercial radio service available to the general population.

There are four classes of citizens band radio viz. Class A to Class D stations respectively.

Citizens band offers a convenient communication system that can be used at home, in a car, in a boat, or on an airplane, or even while walking or hiking. Specific ranges of frequencies are used for radio control of aircraft, model boats and garage door openers. A particular channel is set aside for emergency communications, such as after highway accidents.

In the ultra high frequency band a particular range of frequency has been authorized for citizens band voice and control signals.

Individual operators of citizens band equipment need not be licensed but the transmitting equipment is licensed through the manufactures authorization.

The citizens band operation requires the transmitter and the receiver to be on the same channel and operators generally use a code. This code with some modifications is also used by police and fire departments.

Amateur radio operator is a duly person interested in radio techniques with a personal aim and without financial interest. There are thousands of these operators in the world. These operators converse over distances limited only by the size of the earth and by the power of their stations.

The aeronautical Broadcasting Service disseminates information for the purpose of air navigation and communication. These services are provided by an extensive network of transmitting stations
