You must dispute a charge off with each credit bureau to remove it from your credit history.
You do this by sending in a dispute letter. You must send in a dispute letter to each credit bureau that reflects the charge off in your credit report.
With a dispute letter, you are disputing that the listing is accurate or valid. Reasons to dispute listings are; account is closed, information is out of date and many more.
Credit bureaus are probably not going to respond to your first dispute letter. Often they will write back and request more information about the disputed listing.
The reason for this is that it only costs the credit bureaus money to investigate disputes. Thus they try avoiding conducting investigations.
This is why some people hire a credit repair firm. Credit repair firms are often more successful in getting the credit bureaus to conduct investigations.
Some have suggested that credit bureaus are more responsive to professionals because the professionals know and understand the credit laws unlike the average consumer. What ever the reason I suggest you hire a firm in you have multiple negative listings on your credit history.
What is a Charge Off and What Does It Mean
Charge offs occur once an account is delinquent and no payment is received for six months. It lets the lender charge the debt off of from their financial records.
It becomes a tax break for a creditor. The creditor then can turn around and sell off the delinquent debt to a collection agency and make a notation on your credit report that your account was charged off.
Then calls from the debt collectors will start. If the debt collector can not recover payment they will sell your account to another debt collector. How many hands this debt will travel through depends on the size of the debt.
Every bill collector that makes collection efforts will be able to report a negative listing on your credit. It is common for one charged off account to become multiple marks on your credit.
If your charged off account has become multiple listings then consider a credit repair service. However if it has not and you do not have other negative credit then dispute the listing yourself, just be patient.

In order to really get the ball rolling you first need your credit reports in hand. Take note that I intentionally put a "s" at the end of the word report. That's because you are going to need to request all three of your reports from the credit bureaus. Thanks to the Fair Credit Reporting Act each and every U.S. citizen is entitled to at least one free credit report per year. Personally I recommend that you check your credit two times a year.
Let's cruise on to step number two. If all has gone well you should now have all three credit reports in your hands. It's time to check off all of the negative digs that you find on your credit report.
Now it's time to roll up your sleeves and take the gloves off. At this point you should have all three of your credit reports in your hands. You will need to write a letter of dispute - disputing all of the negative marks that you highlighted in the previous step. Now for the part that most people screw up on. When you mail your letters of it is crucial that you send all three of them via certified mail.
You want to send your dispute letters certified mail because the receipt from the mail will be the only acceptable proof that you will have. Now the clock is ticking. The ball is rolling. The credit bureaus now have 30 days to investigate and respond back to you. If for whatever reason the credit bureaus should fail to do so by law they have to remove the negative mark from your credit report.
Nine out of ten people unfortunately fail to understand the significance of the strategy that I have just explained. I know that I didn't understand it at first. Then I realized that simply by removing a single charge off from my credit report that my credit score could go up well over 100 points. I'm sure that you would agree that in the current economic situation that we all could use all the buying power that we can muster up.
Go my friend and apply your newly found knowledge regarding raising your credit score. Make sure you spread the word around, and once person at a time we can all
