Texas Holdem is a five card poker game. The objective is to make the highest winning hand to win and claim all the wagers made by yourself and your opponents. For the purposes of poker gambling, these wagers are placed in a pot along with the two blind bets that are made at the beginning of every hand. Standard poker hand ranks apply to Texas Holdem.



After two players left of the dealer have placed the big blind and the small blind bets in the pot, the dealer gives each player two cards. These are referred to as hole or pocket cards. Once each player has checked his cards, the first betting round takes place. A player must either wager on his online poker hand or retire from the game if he has an unfavorable hand.

Following the first betting round, the flop takes place. This is when the dealer places three community cards face down on the table. These are used to make up each player's poker online hand. Players bet again after the flop.

After this round, the fourth community card is dealt. This stage of the game is known as the turn. In table limit games, the bets are made at the higher limit. Therefore it will cost a player more to remain in the game from this round on. Poker strategy comes into play heavily after the flop and most serious poker players will leave the game at fourth street if their poker hands are weak.

After players bet on the turn, the fifth card to be laid down face up by the dealer is the river or fifth street. This card is the last that players can use for their poker hands. Usually only those players who believe they have a strong chance of winning the poker game remain in the final betting round after the river card is drawn.

At final showdown, a player must reveal his cards or muck his hand if he is unable to beat an opponent. The player with the highest five card poker hand is declared the winner and receives the contents of the pot.

As you can see, learning how to play poker is relatively simple. The most difficult aspect of the Texas Holdem game is of course making up a strong and competitive poker hand. The task is made much easier when a player is familiar with the poker hand ranks and uses strategy to enhance his game. Knowing how to calculate the poker odds and knowing which cards to raise or fold on are important poker tips to learn, while discipline and the ability to keep a poker game in perspective helps a player conserve his funds.
