Sleep gives your body a rest and allows it to prepare for the next day. It's like giving your body a mini-vacation. Most adults need about 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. You know you're getting enough sleep if you don't feel sleepy during the day. The amount of sleep you need stays about the same throughout adulthood.
You may not realize it, but putting your head to pillow for seven to nine hours per night could absolutely change your life. It's true. Rest and relaxation are just what the doctor ordered, and if you are not doing this, you are specifically ignoring sage medical advice. But, even if you do not always believe in what the experts say, you can certainly believe in what your mind and body are telling you.
Getting a good night of sleep might seem like a luxury or an indulgence, but when you feel well-rested, you are good to everyone around you. No one wants to deal with someone who is grumpy or that constantly complains that they cannot find the time to sleep.
So, for the sake of the sanity and mood of everyone around you, spare them the melodrama of how there is just no chance for you to get rest. The less time you spend complaining about it, the more time you can focus on how you can feel relaxed and prepare for a good night's sleep.
If you are wondering what the experts suggest, here are a few solid tips for sleeping through the night:
Go to bed and wake up at the same time every day, including weekends, even if you didn't get enough sleep. This will help train your body to sleep at night.
Develop a bedtime routine. Do the same thing every night before going to sleep. For example, take a warm bath and then read for 10 minutes every night before going to bed. Soon you'll connect these activities with sleeping, and doing them will help make you sleepy.
Use the bedroom only for sleeping or having sex. Don't eat, talk on the phone or watch TV while you're in bed.
Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. If noise is a problem, use a fan to mask the noise or use ear plugs. If you must sleep during the day, hang dark blinds over the windows or wear an eye mask.
If you are not following these basic tips, you might be jeopardizing your safety. How?
Safety becomes an issue when people are deprived of sleep, or are having trouble sleeping. Studies show that operating a car or other machinery when you are lacking good sleep can be similar to doing these tasks while under the influence of alcohol. Your mind is not alert, and your body is worn out, so you are not in any kind of state to function properly. So, if you have no other reason to get a good night's rest, let this be the one, in order to protect yourself and those around you.
But above all, you should get a good night of sleep because you deserve it. If you have had quite a battle with insomnia, you owe it to yourself to get to the bottom of it, and really find a soothing way to help your body relax.
Sleeping Through The Night
I have three children, so I've made pretty much every mistake known to Mommies, except the fatal ones, as luckily, all three of mine are alive and well. But the biggest mistakes I've made have been in my daughter's sleeping, or lack thereof, habits. So, let me tell you my story, and hopefully you won't be destined to make the same mistakes I have.
First, when she was very tiny, I let her fall asleep in bed with my husband and me. I was nursing at first, and it was just easier to nurse her lying down and let her fall asleep. Then I would move her to her bassinet. Later in the night, when I nursed her again, sometimes I would fall asleep so quickly after nursing her, that I wouldn't even move her back to the bassinet. She would just sleep with us for the rest of the night.
Later, when I had moved her into her crib in the nursery, I would still let her fall asleep in our bed first. I did this because I enjoyed it, it was convenient, and because she didn't fall asleep easily in her room. And, I managed, in the process, to teach my daughter that she needed to be in the room with someone in order to fall asleep. So, guess what happened when she woke up in the middle of the night? She wanted to come back to our bed to fall asleep. And, worse, we gave in. Then we found that she was sometimes willing to go back to sleep in her bed if we gave her a cup of milk, so she began to require a cup of milk every morning at 3:00 am, long after she should have been sleeping through the night. She is now 2 ½ and only in the last month have we managed to go from 9:00 pm until 6:00am with our daughter in her own bed with no milk.
So, why didn't I make any of these mistakes with the other children? Well, they were just different. They were sleepers, and my daughter is not. Both of my boys can fall asleep within five minutes of climbing in bed, and could sleep through and explosion. My six year old used to ask to take a nap. My daughter, on the other hand, doesn't need as much sleep, and doesn't sleep as soundly. So, I had more trouble getting her to sleep, and gave in to any tactic that worked. With the boys, all I had to do was put them in bed.
Now, I've told you this story to point out that we all make mistakes with our children, and to point out how important it is to start your child out with the right sleeping habits. I didn't sleep through the night for almost 2 ½ years, and I have no one to blame but myself. So, take it from someone who has learned the hard way. Put your baby to sleep in her own bed, and teach her to fall asleep all by herself. You'll be glad you did. And, you'll be rested.
