Spring is the time of year when you yearn to finally get outdoors and pursue your health and exercise goals in the fresh air. Many of us dust off the old bicycle, oil the chain and exchange running shoes and treadmills for cycling in the great outdoors. That bicycle really works the lower body and cardio system, but how do you accomplish the same for the upper body.
Ever heard of Kayaking?
Kayaking is a sport that requires both strength and endurance. It does an excellent job of developing the shoulders, chest and back while providing for your requisite cardio needs.
Kayaking can be done on any body of water and most often a lake, river, or in the ocean. It is usually distinguished from canoing by the fact that a kayak body has a closed cockpit while the canoe is open.
Divers and fisherman use kayaks as do adventure sportsman because of the kayak's adaptability and range of touring. Kayaking as a sport has grown tremendously in popularity which has, unfortunately, driven up the cost of equipment over the last several years.
An inflatable kayak for the beginner can be bought for $250 give or take. This level of kayak is usually available from a store like Costco or a sporting goods chain. You can probably find cheaper alternatives but they are not recommended. As with a bicycle, you wouldn't be inclined to start out with the $59 model to start a new fitness routine and this attitude holds true for kayaking as well. $699-$1,000 can put you into a one-man kayak that is good for recreational paddling on fresh water or the sea. More superior boats will cost upwards of the thousand dollar mark and differ based on classification.
The better kayaks are more stable in the water and made of materials that make them light and easier to handle. This increases the price. To get around the cost increases of the better equipment, consider purchasing a used model better suited to the classification you become interested in.
The five categories that kayaks are classified into are determined by intended use of the boat. There are general recreation styles, day trip and touring-expedition models, whitewater and surf classes. Pricing fluctuates by class and usability.
But, kayaking does not have to be expensive. And, you don't have to be on whitewater rapids for it to be a great workout. Like cycling, it increases endurance and upper body strength. You learn to make good choices on the water to successfully navigate your path safely whether on a still lake or a more challenging river.
So if you enjoy exercise outdoors and more importantly, you enjoy the water, add kayaking to your health and fitness routine this year.
Tickets For Spring Training
Your heart and lungs will likely respond better than your legs. Your winter of low activity has caused a reduction of muscle mass. Below we'll outline a 4 week crash course that will put you in a condition to do some hard riding.
For this training plan to be a success, you'll need to commit 1 hour a day 5-6 days/week.
We'll start with a base watt of 200. If you cannot maintain the 200 watts as described please adjust initial wattage to fit your physical ability. At no point in the training should you come close to your max heart rate. If you get close to your max at any point in your training, adjust your work out to keep a 10-15bmp buffer below your max heart rate* or what your doctor has recommended.
Standard Workout
8min light warm up
12min 200 watts at 85-100rpm (or what you can hold constant for 12 min and finish the workout)
4-6min cool down (just enough to clear your legs, longer is not required)
After ride consume a recovery drink
The Standard Workout is designed to be done most often and the Extreme Workout done no more than once a week. When the base watt of 200 becomes too easy and it feels like you're spinning out, add 25 watts to the base and then adjust your jumps according to the pattern stated above.
In 4 weeks you should feel an improvement in your abilities, your legs should be considerably stronger and your lungs/heart in excellent shape.
This work out can be used in conjunction with outdoor riding and/or pleasure rides. It can also be used throughout the winter on a 3-4/day/week basis. Don't be fooled by the short duration of this work out, you will have the strength and endurance claimed by proponents of base mile training.
*Max Heart Rate = 220 ? age (those with heart complications should consult a doctor prior to this work out)
Why have we recommended training on power?
Though heart rate is a good indicator of your physical condition, it is not an indicator of actual work. Watts are consistent from one rider to another, yet heart rate is not. Heart size, complications, diet and condition can all impact your heart rate. Two riders doing the same watts may have two different heart rates. For this reason we feel it best to train with watts.
So use your heart rate monitor to determine if you're pushing yourself too hard. Remember if your heart/chest hurts you are going too hard, so slow down.
