A dusty trail of cattle, as far as the eye can see,



four thousand head of longhorns, going to Abilene

A dozen cowboys, a cook, and that ole trail boss,

put in back here ridin' drag, on this ole crazy hoss.

Trying to drive longhorns, the ornerest critters ever born

is like trying to push a chain, that's got a hide and horns.

If I could only leave the drag a minute or two, and go see

the boss,

he might help me out of here, and get me a decent hoss.

Sure could use some help back here, I sure do need a break,

I ain't had a drink of water, since late yesterday.

If I last the watch on this drive, back here in this saddle,

I'm gonna take up bronc-bending, instead of punching cattle.

If I had a good job, like ridin' out there on flank,

I could get a drink of water, out of that ole windmill tank.

But I'm ridin' drag, I eat on the run, if I get to eat at all,

ain't no wonder I'm so skinny, long, and lanky, and tall.

So, if you hire on to an outfit, ridin' drag is where you time

begins,

you'll always be the first one out and the last one in.

So, try to get in good with the cool, and that ole trail boss,

or else you'll go hungry, ridin' drag, on some ole crazy hoss.
