A Closer Look on Windows



There are many designs for windows. It may be unusual to name them all because some windows are specially made and designed. However, most of those windows are still under the principles of the following window designs:

Different Window Designs

·Glass blocks – These are made from glass with different designs and transparency. It is an alternative for walls because of its thickness and durability. They are formed like wall bricks.

·Bay windows – This is usually composed of three factions. The two parts on the side are usually permanent. The center window is most likely in double hung style. The center window is generally aligned with the wall.

·Seamless bent glass corner windows – These are windows that offer an unrestricted view of the outside. There are no factions on the edges of the window. Only a clean and clear bent glass.

·Bow windows – They are like bay windows but composed of many factions to achieve an almost perfect curve.

·Round top windows – These windows are fixed glass pieces that where architecturally designed to fit the walls. This can often be seen in churches.

·Tilt turn windows – This type of window offers more security as compared to the double hung window because of the multi-point lock system. It is also European in style. The sash can be tilted towards the inside of the room and can be turned up to 180 degrees.

·Hopper windows – This window type has the same principles as the awning windows. However, the sash is hinged at the bottom.

·Jalousie windows – This window is made up of glass plates and is held by metal clips. Innovatively, the plates can be closed and opened simultaneously. It is also known as louvers.

·Awning windows – The sash is hinged only on the top side. It only allows a little opening for ventilation. On the other hand, it is good for security purposes.

·Horizontal slider windows – The sash can slide sideward. Either both of the sashes are sliding or one is permanent. Only half of the window size is open because of the sliding feature.

·Casement windows – The sash is hinged in one side to be able to swing it in an inward or outward manner.

·Double hung windows or vertical sliding windows – This features a classic window design. The upper part can slide down and the lower part can slide up. One sash may be permanent, and it is called, single hung window.

Different Materials Used for Windows

In the ancient times, windows were just holes. Soon it was covered by animal skin, leaves, woods, cloths and many other materials. One of the main materials for windows is glass. Glass differs from their color, design and transparency. There are colored glass, etched glass and translucent glass. They are used to express the privacy or the publicity that the window is offering to the audience.

Other essential materials are wood, steel, fiber glass plastic and aluminum. Wood is one of the classic materials used in windows. Craftsmen are so creative in making wood frames and carving designs for the window.

Wood was proven to last but not a lifetime. It will deteriorate at some time and still needs to be replaced. Steel were mainly used for security purposes as window grills. Still, there are window frames made of steel. Fiber glass plastics are used to ensure a long lasting window. Since it is plastic, it can stand time at a reasonable price. Aluminums frames are used mainly for aesthetic purposes. It can also be as durable as other materials or sometimes, even more. They do not come cheap, but a modern type of house will surely love it.
