Walk It Out Old Ladies

    View:
In Calcutta, each street has a story, by every cornice hangs a tale. And a trip to the Heritage-heavy city is wasted if you miss the significance of the grand old edifices that fill it. Charlock's city is notorious for its humid summers but winters are miraculously mild. Welcome to the heritage walks of Calcutta

.

The Dalhousie Square Walking Tour, also called Footsteps, takes visitors in a 2-km (and 2-hr) trip around 15 buildings in central Calcutta. Dalhousie Square is the city's central business district, and has been so since the East India Company days. Buildings covered include Writers, GPO, the newly renovated Town Hall, St John's Churchyard and Metcalfe Hall. Perambulate in after your guide, and watch the city evolve.

The North Calcutta Walking Tour takes you through the meandering lanes of north Calcutta, into areas like Darjeepara and Shobhabazar. On to the hidden courtyards of merchants? houses, steeped in 300 years of history. The visitor will also experience a slice of the warm, bustling city's life, as he will walk into traditional Bengali homes and meet residents. Built by Bengali merchants, wealthy from commerce with the Company, the houses on the tour are characterized by well-decorated gates; central courtyards with projecting cast-iron balconies covered with wooden awnings, and stained glass windows. And, yes, you'll be shown where Robert Clive went for Durga Puja. Other noteworthy stops are Rabindranath Tagore's house and the Marble Palace

The tour ends with coffee at the coffee house, college Street. What else! Manish Chakraborti, an architect trained in conservation of heritage buildings, started the walks in 1997. They kick off at 7am, avoiding peak-hour traffic, and cost $15 per person. The money goes to ARCH (Action Research in Conservation of Heritage), which seeks to conserve heritage buildings in Calcutta
