What Is Pulled Muscle

    View:
Pulled muscle pain can be extremely painful and may affect daily activities. There are approximately 696 muscles in the body (347 paired and 2 unpaired) and if you take due care, you can make sure to keep them safe from harm. One way to prevent pulled muscles is to stretch before engaging in strenuous activities like exercise or heavy lifting. However, even after doing his, you may put enough strain on the muscles to cause damage. In fact, over 85% of human pain complaints are due to pulled muscle. This is not surprising since skeletal muscle accounts for 40% of body weight.

There are three degrees of muscle ruptures, namely first degree, second degree and third degree tears. A first-degree strain involves less than 5 percent of the muscle. You may notice only mild pain and not lose much strength or range of motion. These mild tears as considered pulled muscles. Second and third degree ruptures are more significant, involving more damaged muscle mass and creating more pain. With third degree rupturing, some bleeding and loss of movement can occur.

The most common pulled muscles are the neck, shoulder, lower back, hip and legs.

What are the symptoms of a Pulled Muscle?

Symptoms of a pulled muscle can involve mild swelling, tenderness, localized pain and bruising. It may also be difficult to utilize the muscle, especially without triggering more discomfort. The area could be bruised and discolored from internal bleeding if the rupture is severe enough. Because the pulled muscle injury may be difficult to distinguish from a fracture or dislocation, it would be best to have a doctor examine you to rule out these serious conditions.

What are the causes of Pulled Muscle pain?

A muscle tear may be partial or complete and caused either by a direct blow or by overexertion. Muscles are most often strained when they are placed under an excessive physical load. Constant activity, like exercise or sports, can cause a pulled muscle as well. Commonly, pulled muscle pain is the result of a muscle tear, which affects part or all of the muscle fibers and the tendons that are attached to the muscle. The inflammation associated with a pulled muscle usually settles within 1 -2 weeks.
