With the recent weight loss and carb watching craze, the market for diet pills and prescription weight control medication is at an all time high. Two out of three Americans are overweight and obesity in children has risen 19% since last year. With obesity on the rise, there is a growing need for weight loss aids. Despite more and more people looking to diet pills and prescription weight loss medication as the answer, few people have taken the time to research how the diet medication really works.

Most all prescription diet medication fall into three categories:

1.Noradrenergenic Agents- The medication in these categories increase the level of norepinephrine in the brain which helps control and suppress appetite. This is the safest form of prescription diet medication and phentermine is the safest brand. Normal cases show weight loss from 5 to 15 pounds over six months.

2.Serotonin-norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors ? The only drug in this category is sibutramine. Sibutramine works by increasing the amount of serotonin and norepinephrine. Both of these are the chemicals that tell your brain that you are full. With sibutramine the initial amount of weight loss gives an indicator as to how much you will lose long term. Studies show that people who lose four or more pounds in the first month are more likely to lose ten percent of their body weight after one year.

3.Lipase inhibitor- The only lipase inhibitor currently available in the United States is oristal (Xenical). Xenical works by blocking the action of lipase which is an enzyme released by the pancreas to aid in the digestion of fat.

Although weight loss drugs pose an advantage in losing weight, they are temporary aids and need to be accompanied by a healthier diet and exercise. Remember, the best diet is not the one that you lose the most weight in the shortest amount of time, it is a change in your lifestyle that you can stick with an make you healthier in the long run.
