About
“Kaki Bukit ” is a Malay word that translates into “foothills”, an ironic name given the absence of hills in Kaki Bukit today. Instead, stepping into Kaki Bukit engulfs you in cliffs of flatted factories and industrial buildings. This district is always crowded and always busy, with workers rushing back and forth from the design companies, furniture warehouses, computer manufacturers or car showrooms. Traffic jams are a common phenomenon in Kaki Bukit, with Jalan Eunos being the most frustratingly congested road of all. Kaki Bukit is the place to go if you want to escape the glitz and glamour of the downtown area and experience ordinary, mundane Singaporean existence.
Industries
In Kaki Bukit, it is easy to get lost in a myriad of factories and industrial parks. Most districts in Singapore have only one industrial park, or, if blessed by fertile fumes, two. Kaki Bukit has more than five. Here you find Kaki Bukit Industrial Park, Shun Li Industrial Park and Empire Technocentre. To further emphasize the district's technological virility, there's Eunos Techpark, Eunos Techpark 1, Kaki Bukit Techpark 1 and Kaki Bukit Techpark 2; after all, two's company and three's a crowd, a saying that seems to apply to even industrial buildings.
This district is one of Singapore 's centres of goods trading and manufacturing. There are plenty of car marts and car showrooms, such as Kaki Bukit Car Mart. Quite fittingly, Singapore 's Vicom Vehicle Inspection Centre is also in Kaki Bukit. The factories in the district also deal with electrical goods and appliances. For example, dealers for Carrier and Daikin air-conditioners are located in Kaki Bukit, as well as a host of supplies dealing in air-cleansing devices. The air in Kaki Bukit, however, is not particularly clean.
Kaki Bukit's Non-Industrial Side
There is still greenery in Kaki Bukit, however, providing you with a breath of fresh air. Stand at the edge of Kaki Bukit's industrial parks and inhale, but that is as far as you can go, since the greenery belongs to the Singapore Army and is a restricted zone. Fortunately for civilians, Kaki Bukit is located next to Bedok Reservoir Park, which is a scenic place to relax.
There are a number of hostels in Kaki Bukit as well, such as Kaki Bukit Hostel and Golden Bukit Dormitory 1 and 2. A PUB (Public Utilities Board, not drinking place) branch is also located in Kaki Bukit, as well as Kaki Bukit Centre, which is Singapore 's school for prisoners. Kaki Bukit is indeed a very functional district.
