About
More than half of this huge district is taken up by greenery – golf courses, reservoirs – but there are still so many things to see, do and experience in Upper Thomson. From plant nurseries to excellent roti prata, this estate is where ordinary Singaporeans go to when they're not working or clubbing. There is also a huge residential area in Upper Thomson, comprising mainly landed property.
History
Upper Thomson is the extension of the Thomson district. The two, therefore, share a similar history. However, there are some very interesting aspects of Upper Thomson, e.g., the names of the streets here. For example, Teacher's Estate is in Upper Thomson. This used to be the place where public teachers and civil servants lived, and Singapore 's Teachers' Union is still located here. The estate also has a street called Tagore Avenue, named after Bengali Nobel Prize Winner Rabindranath Tagore, who was a poet and an artist. Ironically, Tagore Avenue now holds an industrial estate. Near Tagore Avenue is Kalidasa Street, named after another famous Indian literary genius.
At the other end of Upper Thomson is the Caldecott area, which used to be the home of local television. The former Singapore Broadcasting Corporation (SBC), which has been renamed Mediacorp, had its studios in Caldecott Hill. Today, Mediacorp still uses Caldecott Hill as a broadcast centre.
Residential Facilities
The private property in Upper Thomson is facilitated by all sorts of amenities. Thomson Plaza, the local shopping centre, is a popular place with residents of the area. The roti prata here is also reputed to be the best in Singapore.
There are also many medical facilities in Upper Thomson, which are clustered together by Thomson Road. These include Mount Alverina Hospital, Mount Alverina Medical Centre, Tampines Home and Assissi Home and Hospice.
Upper Thomson also houses many charity organizations such as Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Theresa's home, and Riding for the Disabled Assocation of Singapore. The last lets the disabled, especially children, go for horse riding lessons.
Nurseries
There are many plant nurseries in Upper Thomson, all lining Lornie Road . Some of these are big companies such as Far East Flora. Most nurseries do wholesale and retail, and are extremely crowded on weekends and during the Chinese New Year season. Most of these nurseries also provide services such as garden landscaping and delivery of plants and flowers.
Country Clubs
You find Island Golf Course, a popular club for businessmen, in Upper Thomson. Horse-riding enthusiasts can also indulge in equestrian activities at the Singapore Polo Club, also in this district.
The Haunting
Towards the edge of Upper Thomson is Mount Pleasant Cemetery. This cemetery is old and is reputed to be extremely haunted, as is Old Thomson Road. Singapore ghost-hunters such as the Singapore Paranormal Investigators occasionally explore these places for sightings.
